The boss of UK business ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has warned that RIPE NCC, which handles the distribution and registering of internet addresses for most of Europe, is “forecast to run out” of IPv4 addresses this very weekend. But what does that mean for ordinary folk like you or me?

Several of the United Kingdom’s largest consumer broadband ISPs have spoken to ISPreview.co.uk about the increasingly urgent issue of Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) adoption and their current state of readiness for today’s World IPv6 Launch Day. So far none of the big home broadband ISPs have officially signed up to the initiative.

Tomorrow is World IPv6 Launch Day and in anticipation of that event ISPreview.co.uk has managed to secure a short interview with Pascal Portelli, a Senior Vice President of global media and technology firm Technicolor, which is perhaps best known for building one of the world’s first truly consumer affordable and IPv6 capable broadband ISP routers (TG582n).

The Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC), which handles the distribution and registering of numeric internet addresses for most of Europe’s broadband ISPs, has released a new table that shows the UK lagging behind the top 20 nations in terms of IPv6 adoption (just 17.3% of the country’s networks have been upgraded).

The Director of broadband ISP Andrews & Arnold UK (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, reports that a forthcoming firmware upgrade for the Zoom X7N wireless ADSL2+ modem router should make it work properly with the latest Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) standard and PPPoA. Crucially Zoom’s kit, much like Technicolor’s TG582n, is a low cost router; something the market has been lacking for awhile.
