Customers of BT Retail’s Total Broadband Option 1 package have reportedly become experimental subjects for the ISP’s new pilot of the controversial IPv4 internet address sharing (Carrier Grade NAT) technology, which could cause problems because it allows a single IP address to be shared between several users.

UK ISP BE Broadband (O2) has released a new beta firmware v10.2.2.9 for its Technicolor TG582n (BE Box v2) broadband router that adds a number of new features, including preliminary IPv6 support, greater access control over other network devices and automatic WiFi channel selection for an improved wireless signal.

Internet providers from around the United Kingdom have given a decidedly mixed response after we asked a group of them whether IPv4 address sharing (Carrier Grade NAT) was the future of fixed line broadband (i.e. until full IPv6 adoption). CGNAT allows a single IP address to be shared between several users but this can introduce serious problems.

UK ISP PlusNet has quietly announced a controversial plan to conduct a 3 week trial of IPv4 address sharing (Carrier Grade NAT). But sharing a single IP address between several customers, often as a means of delaying IPv6 adoption, carries with it more than a few problems.

The 6UK campaign, a not-for-profit membership organisation that was setup with support from Vinton Gray “Vint” Cerf (i.e. father of the internet) and others to help encourage UK ISP uptake of the IPv6 internet addressing standard, has announced that it is “powerless to encourage adoption” without more government support and will thus have to close.

Business ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) has today officially announced the introduction of a simplified new broadband package for home users (Home::1), which forgoes the providers complicated “units based” charging model in favour of a simple usage allowance quota. But is it too expensive?

The RIPE Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC), which manages the regional distribution of internet addresses for the UK, Europe, Middle East and parts of Central Asia (required by all devices that connect to the internet), has officially handed out the final blocks of IPv4 address space from its available pool.

Europe’s Regional Internet Registry (RIR), RIPE NCC, which handles the distribution of internet addresses for the UK and EU (needed by all devices that connect to the internet), has officially warned that they have just “one month worth of IPv4 address space” left (about 4,134,976 addresses).

20th August, 2012 (4 Comments)

ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has today celebrated its tenth year of offering Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) services to UK internet customers, which comes at a time when many of their rivals are still “dragging their heels” over adoption of the standard; that’s despite IPv4 addresses in Europe being perilously close to running out.

The boss of UK business ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, has warned that RIPE NCC, which handles the distribution and registering of internet addresses for most of Europe, is “forecast to run out” of IPv4 addresses this very weekend. But what does that mean for ordinary folk like you or me?

Several of the United Kingdom’s largest consumer broadband ISPs have spoken to ISPreview.co.uk about the increasingly urgent issue of Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) adoption and their current state of readiness for today’s World IPv6 Launch Day. So far none of the big home broadband ISPs have officially signed up to the initiative.

Tomorrow is World IPv6 Launch Day and in anticipation of that event ISPreview.co.uk has managed to secure a short interview with Pascal Portelli, a Senior Vice President of global media and technology firm Technicolor, which is perhaps best known for building one of the world’s first truly consumer affordable and IPv6 capable broadband ISP routers (TG582n).

The Réseaux IP Européens Network Coordination Centre (RIPE NCC), which handles the distribution and registering of numeric internet addresses for most of Europe’s broadband ISPs, has released a new table that shows the UK lagging behind the top 20 nations in terms of IPv6 adoption (just 17.3% of the country’s networks have been upgraded).

12th March, 2012 (2 Comments)

The Director of broadband ISP Andrews & Arnold UK (AAISP), Adrian Kennard, reports that a forthcoming firmware upgrade for the Zoom X7N wireless ADSL2+ modem router should make it work properly with the latest Internet Protocol v6 (IPv6) standard and PPPoA. Crucially Zoom’s kit, much like Technicolor’s TG582n, is a low cost router; something the market has been lacking for awhile.
