A new survey from Broadband Genie, which used a special tool to analyse and estimate the consumer stress levels of 305,568 tweets that were aimed at major UK broadband ISPs, has revealed which providers had the most stressed customers. Overall it’s bad news for Shell Energy, but good news for Hyperoptic.

Ofcom UK has published their 2020 survey of broadband and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (78%) again, while Three UK were the same for mobile (89%).

Rising Copper Prices are a Double Edged Sword for UK Broadband

Last week the price per tonne of copper (Cu) bucked expectations by briefly reaching a new two year high of just over $6,500 (£5,074), which could act as a further incentive for UK telecoms operators to remove their old cables in favour of fibre optic (e.g. FTTP) infrastructure. Hull-based UK ISP KCOM, which covers a big chunk of East Yorkshire with their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network, has secured an additional 2 year funding facility from Lloyds Bank worth £30m. The extra investment will help expand their network into more of East Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire.

Ofcom Sets Out Funding Rules for 10Mbps UK Broadband USO

Ofcom has today set out the final funding regulations for their legally-binding Universal Service Obligation (USO), which went live in March (summary) – supplied by BT and KCOM – and aims to ensure that people in disadvantaged areas can request a minimum broadband speed of “at least” 10Mbps (1Mbps upload).

Ofcom 2020 Study – Average UK Broadband ISP Speeds Hit 64Mb

Ofcom has published their annual report into fixed line home broadband speeds, which finds that the average download rate has risen from 54.2Mbps last year to 64Mbps now (uploads from 7.2Mbps to 14Mbps). It also examines the performance and latency of big ISPs including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and others.

KCOM Signs £3m Fibre Broadband Supply Deal with Hexatronic
