Customers of mobile network operator Three UK have struggled to use their 3G and 4G based data (Mobile Broadband) connectivity since around 9am this morning and the fault appears to have sporadically affected subscribers across the United Kingdom.

Local residents and the North Swindon MP have raised concerns about the general feasibility and size of masts being used as part of a £1.9m project with UKB Networks, which will push “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) coverage to 99.4% of premises by 2016 via a fixed wireless 4G (LTE) network.

The United Kingdom’s national telecoms regulator has today published its final assessment on their much delayed plans to hike the annual licence fees for the 900MHz and 1800MHz radio spectrum bands, which has seen the costs come down again.. but only a little.

Akamai has today published their latest Q2 2015 State of the Internet (SotI) report to reveal that the world’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 5.1Mbps (up from 5Mbps in Q1), which compares with 11.8Mbps in the United Kingdom (up from 11.6Mbps). The UK’s overall country ranking has also improved from 21nd to 19th.

Mobile operator Vodafone has expanded the reach of their Rural Open Sure Signal (Femtocell) technology to bring 3G based Mobile Broadband and voice services to three further remote rural communities in Norfolk (England), including High Kelling, Hillington, and Upper Sheringham.

Mobile operator EE has announced that it is “accelerating” the roll-out of their new 4G+ (LTE-Advanced Category 6) based Mobile Broadband tech around London, which can in some areas deliver peak download speeds of 146Mbps; although average speeds will be a fair bit lower.

Mobile operator giffgaff, which makes use of the Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) platform from O2 UK, will tomorrow revamp its range of 4G and Tethering friendly mobile tariffs (goodybags) to include bigger Internet data allowances and more choice. Now say goodbye to the “unlimited” plan.

Mobile operators Three UK and Vodafone have each secured a 20MHz slice of the 1.4GHz radio spectrum band (L-Band 1452-1492MHz) from Qualcomm, which the operators say could be used to help deliver 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband speeds that are “up to three times faster” than today’s.

Mobile operator Three UK has added a new option to their Mobile Broadband plans, which gives you 40GB (GigaBytes) of data to use for the not insignificant price of £45 per month, although this is still double the previous top allowance of 20GB (from £21-23 per month).

In an unsurprising development it looks as if Vodafone and O2 will not achieve their original target to roll-out 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband network connectivity to 98% of the United Kingdom’s population by the end of 2015, although the Government doesn’t expect it to be done until 2017 anyway.

A Wiltshire farmer has setup Agri-Broadband to help remote rural farmers turn weak 4G (Mobile Broadband) signals into superfast home broadband connections by using a custom built wireless mast and a lot of fibre optic cable. But it probably won’t work for everybody and isn’t cheap.

The telecoms regulator has launched a new Mobile Coverage Checker, which they hope will make it easier for consumers in the United Kingdom to view the 2G, 3G and 4G (Mobile Broadband) signal quality of Mobile Network Operators in any given area. But it’s not that different from what is already on offer.

Vodafone has announced that customers of their 4G (LTE) based mobile plans in the United Kingdom will now be able to make use of the same connectivity and their existing allowances (calls, texts and data [Mobile Broadband]) while roaming across 63 destinations worldwide (70 if you include 3G or 2G).

Vodafone has found a fix for some of the communities in their Rural Open Sure Signal (ROSS100) project, which until recently had been unable to benefit from the Femtocell tech (i.e. uses fixed line services to boost local mobile signals) because the related areas suffered from a lack of good fixed line broadband.

Switching to a different Mobile Network Operator (MNO) in the United Kingdom could soon become even easier after the national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, proposed a number of changes that they claim would harmonise and thus simplify the process by taking a cue from home broadband ISP migrations.
