Mobile giant EE has reported their latest Q2 2015 results today, which revealed that the operators 4G network coverage had reached the 90% (population) milestone. Elsewhere their fixed line home broadband subscriber growth slowed to total 919,000 (up by +35K in Q2 vs +50K in Q1 and +44K in Q4 2014).

A new survey of 2,000 British adults from Global Wireless Solutions (GWS) has claimed that 1 in 4 people are using a Mobile Broadband (3G, 4G) connection at home in order to get online because their fixed line broadband fuelled home WiFi service is not good enough.

A new AeroMobile and OnePoll survey of 4,250 adults in the UK, Germany and UAE between 25th March and 7th April 2015 has shed new light on how much people use their mobile phone while abroad versus when at home, which is despite the often significantly higher roaming charges that can be incurred.

The Government has published a new document that very roughly sets out some of the legislation that will be made over the coming months and years in order to ensure the delivery of “world-class digital infrastructure in every part of the UK“. A recently elected Highlands MP in Scotland, Drew Hendry (SNP), has called for a radical change in Ofcom’s regulatory policy that would allow UK mobile phone customers to exit their contracts without penalty if they suffered from poor or no signal coverage. But notspots or areas of weak signal are common.

BT has tweaked some of their Internet and mobile package features and prices by adding 1000 minutes to the BTMobile 2GB tariff, cutting the cost of their superfast Unlimited BTInfinity (FTTC) service to just £12.50 a month and returning Sainsbury’s vouchers worth £75 to £125 to their home broadband deals.

Mobile operator EE has come top in the latest RootMetrics study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance for the United Kingdom’s capital city of London, with the operator reporting the fastest median download speed of 25.4Mbps and the fastest uploads of 19.3Mbps. Vodafone was a distant 2nd.

The latest global Q1 2015 State of the Internet report from Akamai has revealed that the world’s average fixed line broadband download speed is now 5Mbps (up by 10% since Q4 2014), while the United Kingdom increased by 6.7% in the quarter to 11.6Mbps. Overall the UK is now the 21st fastest in the world, which is down three places from the end of 2014.

The International Telecommunication Union has put a lid on the debate over the peak performance capabilities of future 5G (IMT-2020) based Mobile Broadband technology by defining its top speed as 20Gbps (Gigabits per second), which is 20 times faster than the 4G (IMT-Advanced) rate of 1Gbps.

Vodafone has announced that their Rural Open Sure Signal (Femtocell) technology has been expanded to help the isolated “not-spot” community of Broad Chalke in Wiltshire (England) to receive a 3G based Mobile Broadband and voice service.

A new report from Juniper Research has predicted that Mobile Network Operators (MNO) will offload 60% of their Smartphone and Tablet based Mobile Broadband (3G, 4G) data traffic to WiFi networks by 2019 (equivalent to 115,000 Petabytes), which is up almost four-fold from 30,000PB this year.
