SIM-only mobile provider Spusu, which holds a virtual operator (MVNO) agreement via BT Wholesale to harness EE’s national 4G and 5G network, has celebrated their second year of operation in the United Kingdom by gifting 5GB (GigaBytes) of free data (mobile broadband) to “all its customers” for the remainder of June (except those with unlimited data, obviously).

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that – over the past 12-months – they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G mobile services across “over” 3,000 postcodes in the city of Glasgow (Scotland), which should bring “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability to the area.

Network analyst firm Streetwave has today shared the results from a recent survey they conducted inside St Mary’s Hospital in London, which examined the signal coverage and data performance of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks – including EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2.

The Government (DSIT) has this morning announced that they’ve appointed Lesley Cowley OBE to be the new Chair of their broadband and mobile centric Building Digital UK (BDUK) agency. The development comes after former Chair, Simon Blagden, resigned from his position back in July 2024 (here) and was replaced by Hazel Hobbs (Interim Chair).

The UK Government’s Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rachel Reeves, has today delivered her 2025 Spending Review, which included a few bits of new information and updated figures for telecoms. But as well as confirming £1.9bn for broadband and mobile projects (existing commitments), it also appeared to reflect a delay to the gigabit broadband roll-out from 2030 to 2032.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone have announced that they’ve “successfully completed tests of a major 5G software enhancement” with Nokia, Qualcomm Technologies and Xiaomi. The change, once deployed, promises to boost data (mobile broadband) throughput for users by nearly 25%.

Mobile operator Vodafone has today announced that they’ve agreed a new partnership with UK-based quantum company, ORCA computing. The deal will see the network provider harnessing quantum technology to help them quickly map out the fastest and cheapest route when building and upgrading future mobile and fixed broadband networks.

The Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) has announced that they’ve appointed network analyst firm Streetwave to harness fleets of bin lorries to help “accurately” map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage and performance, which will focus on the North of Scotland (i.e. Moray, Aberdeenshire and Highland Council areas).

Mobile network operator Vodafone have announced that people in Belfast, Sheffield, Liverpool and Watford can now take advantage of their “try before you buy” style eSIM, which first went live in London last month (here). Consumers can try the operator’s service, free, for 7-days with 50GB of data (mobile broadband), 500 minutes and 500 texts – all without changing your number.

A group of land and property owners, including the British Property Federation (BPF) and National Farmers Union (NFU) among them, have written a new letter that calls on the UK government to suspend earlier reforms that made it easier and cheaper for mobile and broadband operators to deploy their infrastructure on private land.

Some of ISPreview’s readers have informed us that mobile operator EE (BT) appears to have pushed out a new carrier update, which enables the “Voice Over 5G Standalone” network feature on Smartphones that can support it. Currently, we’ve only seen reports of this from Apple iPhone users.

The Independent Networks Co-operative Association (INCA), which represents many of the UK’s alternative broadband operators, has today proposed several priority recommendations to help address – as part of a Lords Select Committee inquiry – the gaps in critical broadband infrastructure that could be holding back home-based working.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning announced that new and upgrading customers on their ‘Pay Monthly Plus’ or ‘Ultimate Plan’ (phone, tablet, or SIM only) can make the most of any unused 4G or 5G data (mobile broadband) each month as it will now roll over to their following months’ airtime allowance.

Mobile network operator Vodafone has today launched a new 4G and 5G-ready mobile data (broadband) Travel eSIM service, which now extends to 206 destinations on 700 networks – supported by its GenAI system for customer service. But they’re still just one option in a growing sea of similar services, where standing out is difficult.

The deals are set to become available via the operator’s EE Store tomorrow (5th June 2025) to coincide with global availability.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) recently started emailing customers with handsets that are “not fully compatible with the UK’s 4G or 5G network” in order to notify them of their imminent 3G switch-off and offer an upgrade. But it’s worth noting that these notices will sometimes still get sent to people with technically compatible phones too, often leading to confusion.
