As predicted last month the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) will next week ban a website advert for a Lycamobile service, which misleadingly claimed to offer “UNLIMITED 4G DATA“, after the operator failed to respond to the advertising watchdogs enquiries.

The remote Inner Hebrides based Isle of Coll, which is home to a tiny population of around 200 people, is about to become Scotland’s first island to get a 4G (LTE) mobile network thanks to a £165,000 community project (Demonstrating Digital Programme) funded by the Scottish Government.

A new survey of 1,000 4G users on EE’s network in the United Kingdom (conducted by TNS) has reported that the number of customers using fewer or no public WiFi services since getting 4G has reached 54% and 30% are using less or no home broadband. Indeed 3% of the operator’s subscribers claim to have cancelled home broadband after getting 4G.

Anybody who has been wondering how BT would make use of their new 4G mobile spectrum and EE MVNO deal now has a partial answer. The UK telecoms giant has today launched its new 4G (LTE) based mobile plans, which also include unlimited wifi “at no extra cost“. But residential consumers will have to wait a little longer.

Mobile operator EE (Everything Everywhere) has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that their new “superfast” 4G (LTE at 1800MHz, 800MHz and 2.6GHz) based Mobile Broadband network will not reach its originally predicted UK coverage target of 98% (population) by the end of 2014 and will instead fall short at 90%.

The UK telecoms and media regulator has, following concerns from some of the major Mobile Network Operators, today launched another consultation on their controversial and Government-backed plans for a massive hike in annual licence fees for the 900MHz and 1800MHz radio spectrum bands. But the revised fees are still high.

Mobile operator Three UK has announced that their new App (Three inTouch), which allows customers to talk or text using their existing allowances via a WiFi based wireless Internet connection, is now live. In addition, the operator has revealed stats for data usage on its 3G and 4G based Mobile Broadband network.

Mobile operator EE (4GEE) has today announced that their LTE based “superfast” 4G network has reached another 21 towns, which takes the total to 250 towns and cities (including 2,500 villages and small towns) or 73% of the UK population. Saltash, a town of 15,000 people in Cornwall, is one of the latest additions.

The Mayor of London, Boris Johnson, will this week announce the UK capital city’s long term infrastructure investment plan to 2050 and predicted that the “world’s first” major deployment of future 5G based Mobile Broadband technology will also be rolled out there by 2020. Obviously.

Mobile and Internet provider EE UK has reported that their fixed line home broadband ISP subscribers grew by an impressive +30k in Q2-2014 (calendar) to total 775,000 customers, which is up from the +19k added during Q1-2014 and also better than the +12k in Q4-2013. Meanwhile their 4G (LTE) users grew +1.3m in the quarter to top 4.183m (way up from the +889k added in Q1).

O2 UK, which might soon find itself in hot water with the advertising watchdog.. again, has launched an enhanced O2 Travel add-on that claims to give existing pay monthly customers access to uncapped Mobile Broadband data usage (or 50MB on pay-as-you-go) while roaming in Europe for just £1.99 per day. Naturally there’s a catch.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that it will shortly begin expanding the use of their Open Sure Signal (Femtocell) technology in order to make 3G based Mobile Broadband and voice calling services available in up to 100 new rural communities across the United Kingdom.

Mobile operator Three UK has signed an agreement with Virgin Media that will enable their customers to access the cable operators WiFi wireless Internet network at 137 London Underground stations for free, just as Vodafone, EE and O2 already can. The provider has also refreshed their SIM-Only plans with better Mobile Broadband allowances.

The National Parks England (NPE) and UK Mobile Operators Association (MOA) have reached a new “landmark agreement” that aims to boost the coverage of mobile phone and Mobile Broadband connectivity in protected rural areas, albeit while also “minimising any adverse environmental impacts” and working “proactively and pragmatically in order to achieve these aims“.

Mobile operator Three UK has come top in a new Road Trip 2014 study of Mobile Broadband performance, which among other things found that the provider delivered both the fastest average 3G (4.48Mbps DOWN and 1.4Mbps UP) and 4G (6.19Mbps DOWN and 1.54Mbps UP) based mobile Internet speeds. Meanwhile EE was a close second.

In an unsurprising move the Post Office has confirmed that their existing fixed line broadband and phone services, which are now predominantly supplied by TalkTalk’s platform after last year’s traumatic move away from BT (here), will soon be complement by a mobile product thanks to their new Mobile Virtual Network Operator (MVNO) deal with EE.
