Mobile operators EE and Three UK have once again come top of a new RootMetrics study into Mobile Broadband performance across the three cities of Birmingham, Nottingham and Coventry in England.

The National Audit Office (NAO) has given its approval to Ofcom’s recent auction of 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz), which some had criticised for only being able to raise £2.368bn (about £1bn less than the government had initially hoped for).

Mobile network operator EE has confirmed that its new 4G (LTE / 1800MHz) “double speed” Mobile Broadband upgrade will go live tomorrow and boost headline speeds up to 150Mbps (i.e. average speeds of 24-30Mbps). A new BrightBox 2 ac spec wireless router has also been launched for their for Home Fibre Broadband package(s).

The latest RootMetrics study of mobile network performance in Newcastle (North East England) has named EE and Three UK as the best two networks for Mobile Broadband speeds, with both also scoring well for text message and call performance. But once again Vodafone was the worst.

UK ISP TalkTalk are offering double the internet usage allowances across their various mobile phone tariffs, including their current half price SIM-only options. As a result tariffs at the cheapest end, which previously included just 100MB (MegaBytes) of data, now come with 200MB and those that came with 2GB (GigaBytes) now get 4GB.

Chinese telecoms giant Huawei has said that the next generation of 5G based Mobile Broadband technology, which it says should “emerge in the market between 2020 and 2030“, will ultimately allow “every person” to access wireless internet download speeds of 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) via their mobile operator.

Mobile operator’s Three UK and EE have come top in the latest annual study of roaming Mobile Broadband performance. Overall Three UK delivered the highest peak internet download speed of 8.66Mbps (Megabits per second), while EE delivered the best average speed of 3.43Mbps. But once again it’s bad news for Vodafone.
