Mobile operator EE (BT) has worked with mobile network partner Ericsson to introduce two new capabilities to their core 5G Standalone (5G SA / 5G+) mobile broadband network – Network Slice Selection Function (NSSF) and Network Exposure Function (NEF), which enables programmable connectivity, letting businesses and their developers request network performance on demand.

Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has this morning confirmed that they’ll pump another £700m into their Mobile Transformation Plan for 2026 (the same amount as last year), which much like in 2025 will be focused on “improving reliability, boosting capacity and extending coverage across the country“.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that they aren’t only working with AST SpaceMobile to improve mobile connectivity and have today also signed an agreement to harness Amazon Leo‘s (formerly Project Kuiper) satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), albeit only for mobile backhaul (i.e. linking 4G and 5G masts in Europe [inc. UK] and Africa to their core network).

Network benchmarking firm MedUX has this morning published the results from a new pan-European study that examined the real-world Quality of Experience (QoE) of mobile connectivity (4G, 5G etc.) across the continent, which unfortunately finds that Great Britain (GB) is lagging near the bottom of most tables.

The United Kingdom will today become one of the first countries in Europe to go live on Starlink’s latest Direct to Cell (DtC) and satellite based 4G mobile data (broadband) connectivity, as mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) switches-on its new O2 Satellite service for customers. Better yet, it’ll only set most customers back an extra £3.

SpaceX has revealed that its “greatly enhanced” second generation (GEN2) of Direct to Cell (DtC) capable Starlink broadband satellites, which are due to launch in 2027, will aim to support 5G connectivity and deliver peak data speeds of 150Mbps (Megabits per second) per user.

Network testing firm Ookla, which collects data from consumers via their popular broadband Speedtest.net website and App, has teamed-up with communications technology developer Ericsson to demonstrate an “innovative solution allowing users to measure and validate 5G network slicing performance” via the same app.

Mobile operator Vodafone (VodafoneThree) has announced that they’ve deployed “dedicated” 5G and 4G mobile coverage to Aberdeen International Airport, which is one of Scotland’s busiest airports. But travellers will need to wait a “few months” more before the operator expands their fastest 5G Standalone (5GSA) technology to the same location.

Ofcom has published their 9th annual (2026) monitoring report into the Net Neutrality guidelines, which were originally established to prevent unfair blocking or slowing of access to legal websites and internet services by broadband ISPs and mobile operators. Overall the UK telecoms regulator has “not identified any significant cause for concern“, although EE may have an issue with tethering restrictions.

Software development firm Bluehouse Technology has launched a new product, which is designed to make it much easier for alternative UK broadband providers to launch their own white-label style virtual eSIM based mobile (MVNO) network service – enabling them reach to customers beyond their physical fibre footprints.

The latest Q4 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have just been published and reveal that their gigabit broadband network increased its UK coverage by 115,100 premises in the quarter (down from 139k in Q3), while related customers fell to total 5,687,600 (down by -16.7k in Q4 vs +60.8k in Q3). But their mobile base grew and 5G outdoor population coverage hit 87%.

The recently launched virtual mobile operator (mvno) for the Channel Islands, Coop Mobile, has complained to the Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) that rival operator JT has been disrupting the ability of consumers to switch to Coop’s service by preventing them from being able to keep their existing mobile number as part of the process.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today approved a request by the parent of mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) to vary its spectrum licence to allow for the launch of their imminent O2 Satellite service, which will harness Starlink’s satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) to connect with standard smartphones in the UK.

A new study into the global progress of 5G Standalone mobile broadband networks, which was conducted by Ookla, has revealed that global 5G SA availability – based on Speedtest.net sample share – reached 17.6% in Q4 2025 (i.e. one in six 5G speed tests were conducted on SA networks). The UK was also identified as an accelerator and saw its share rise from 1.7% to 7% in the last year.

New research from the University of Surrey has claimed that an “optimal combination of energy-efficient” 5G (mobile broadband) network features, such as AI systems that let mobile mast and antenna base stations go into sleep mode when usage is low and phones that avoid unnecessary background network checks, could cut “indirect carbon emissions” across the UK by c.25 million metric tons.
