Mobile operator O2 (Virgin Media) has revealed that they’ve recently boosted 4G and 5G based mobile (mobile broadband) coverage across 590 miles of road in the UK (i.e. major motorways and A roads, including the M1, M4, M6, M8 and M25). The move aims to improve network reliability and help drivers with navigation, charging apps and calls to breakdown services etc.

TechUK, which represents many of the UK’s key technology firms, has today drawn on 23 indicators from across the economy, connectivity, and skills to paint a regional and national picture of the tech ecosystem via their 2025 Local Digital Index. But the report also calls on the government to “fast-track” completion of its broadband and mobile projects to tackle slow spots, ideally alongside relief from business rates.

The cross-party Home-based Working Committee (Lords Select Committee) has published its report on remote and hybrid working in the UK, which among other things finds that the government should “increase long-term investment in digital infrastructure, particularly broadband” in order to properly support such working.

The Great Western Railway (GWR), which operates most train services across the Great Western Main Line (GWML) – the rail line in England that runs between London Paddington and Bristol Temple Meads, has joined with Peninsula Transport, Network Rail and Motion Applied to pilot faster on-board broadband (WiFi) using “technology from the world of Formula 1“.

The Head of Standards at Nokia Technologies, Peter Merz, has today told ISPreview – as part of our latest interview – that they’re conscious of wanting to avoid what mobile operators call “G-fatigue” (over-hyping) with their development of future 6G mobile (broadband) technology, which he says will be more about “intelligence and efficiency” than raw data throughput.

A few months ago we reported that the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) in England and network analyst firm Streetwave had begun a new project to map 4G and 5G mobile broadband coverage and speed across the region using bin lorries (here). The data from this has now been made available to the public via a new interactive map.

Cellnex UK consolidated 4G and 5G mobile mast for VodafoneThree

Wireless infrastructure firm Cellnex has today announced that they’ve delivered their “very first” consolidated 4G and 5G mast site for the recently merged mobile operators of Vodafone and Three UK (VodafoneThree) – five months ahead of schedule, which was established in the Lancashire (England) town of Burnley. Many more are expected to follow.

Consumer mobile provider SMARTY, which is a virtual mobile operator (MVNO) on the Three UK (VodafoneThree) network, has today launched a new “Everyone Unlimited” group plan that offers unlimited data (4G / 5G mobile broadband) deals for all group members (each group can include up to 8 members). Savings of up to £35 per month are said to be possible.

A new report from the Digital Poverty Alliance (DPA) has warned that the ongoing switch-off by mobile operators Vodafone / Three UK, EE and O2 of legacy 3G and 2G networks “exposes a deep fault line in digital inclusion,” which they say could risk disconnecting vulnerable users (e.g. those with telecare systems and safety devices) from essential communication and support.

The BT Group has today published their H1 FY26 biannual results to Sept 2025, which reveals that Openreach’s full fibre (FTTP) network added 2.2 million premises to their UK coverage to total 20.3m (level with H2 FY25 growth); including 5.5m in rural areas. But broadband line losses to rivals jumped to 242k in the last quarter (up from 169k).

The Broadband Forum has published a new technical report that outlines how multiple tenants and apartments (MDU – Multi-Dwelling Units) could receive gigabit broadband connectivity through a single 5G based Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) network connection, not least by reusing some of the building’s existing infrastructure.

O2 (Virgin Media) has partnered with IONX Networks to become one of the first mobile operators in the UK to successfully integrate a neutral host Small Cell into their live 5G Standalone (SA) core network, which supports the ongoing expansion of their new ultrafast mobile broadband service (currently available to more than 70% of the population).

The latest Q3 2025 results from Virgin Media and O2 have revealed that their FTTP broadband network increased its coverage by 139,300 premises in the quarter (up from 114.9k in Q2). Similarly, related customers grew to total 5,704,300 (up by 60.8k in Q3 vs -51.4k in Q2) and O2’s mobile base jumped by 419,400 in the quarter, while also doing a multi-year deal with Starlink for satellite mobile (Direct to Cell).

Residents and businesses in the West Yorkshire (England) market town of Hebden Bridge, which is home to 4,500 people, have been warned that they could suffer from weak to non-existent mobile signals on O2 and Vodafone’s network, potentially lasting into early 2026, after a local mobile mast was suddenly removed.
