RootMetrics has today published their latest biannual report into the reliability, call / text performance and Internet (3G and 4G data) speeds of the United Kingdom’s four primary Mobile Network Operators (MNO), which saw EE pick-up the most wins and Three UK come a more distant second.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today announced that they’ve joined ten other broadband and mobile providers in signing Ofcom’s Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on Nuisance Calls, which commits them to develop new technical measures for “reducing the impact of unlawful nuisance calls on consumers“.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today spoken out in favour of the proposed £10.25bn merger between mobile operators Three UK (CK Hutchison Holdings) and O2 (Telefonica), with the provider adding that “‎any competition concerns can be addressed without blocking [the deal]“.

The parent of mobile operator Three UK (CK Hutchison Holdings) has moved to counter Ofcom’s concerns about their proposed £10.25bn merger deal with O2 (Telefonica) by making “three clear and simple promises“, which include plans for a £5bn network investment and a pledge not to raise prices for 5 years.

The Advertising Standards Authority has reversed an old decision by choosing to ban an early 2014 press advert for one of O2’s mobile tariffs, which was found to mislead because of small print that contradicted the headline cost by pointing to an RPI (inflation) linked price rise.

Mobile operator Giffgaff has been named as the best UK mobile network operator for customer service, with only 5% of respondents to a new survey rating them as “poor”. Unfortunately the bottom spots were occupied by Vodafone and EE.

Sharon White, the CEO of Ofcom, told an event at the LSE’s Hong Kong Theatre last night that she wants to drive more “competition” into the market and rejects greater “consolidation“. White also raised concern about rising prices and said that too many people still suffer “poor or no access” to modern mobile and broadband.

The £10.25bn Hutchison Whampoa (Three UK) deal to buy O2 from debt-laden Telefonica looks set to face a big hurdle after the Competition and Markets Authority preliminarily ruled that the “transaction threatens to significantly [affect] competition” in the United Kingdom’s mobile market.
