Statistical experts RootMetrics have today published a report into the mobile network performance of EE, Three UK, Vodafone and O2 across 16 of the United Kingdom’s largest cities, which reveals that EE delivers the overall best performance thanks to their stronger 4G network. But the others are catching.

The communications regulator has today published their latest quarterly consumer complaints report to the end of 2014 and unsurprisingly, despite a general flatness in complaint volumes, there are still some familiar names topping the tables. Telecoms analysts at Ovum have claimed that Mobile Network Operators, such as Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2 in the United Kingdom, could potentially cut costs and adopt a pure 4G (LTE) focus by switching off their legacy 2G and 3G platforms by 2020. But it might not be quite so simple.

The Government’s agreement with mobile operators (i.e. Three UK, O2, EE and Vodafone) to extend the geographic coverage of 2G (voice and text) networks from 80% today to 90% by 2017 (the target for 3G and 4G is 85%) appears to have suffered another blow after operators were warned that they might not be allowed to build taller masts.

A new note from Morgan Stanley, the financial management firm, has suggested that one by-product of Three UK’s (Hutchison Whampoa) £10.25bn move to buy O2 from Telefonica is that the new combined business may “ultimately decide to explore an entry into UK fixed-line“.. again.
