Mobile operator Vodafone UK has failed Ofcom’s 3G based Mobile Broadband coverage obligation, which requires them to provide related network coverage in the 2100MHz band to at least 90% of the UK population. But apparently they only fell short by 1.4%.

Communications provider Entanet, which supplies a number of UK Internet providers with broadband services, has this week become the latest operator to publish plans for moving their existing O2/BE Wholesale based unbundled (LLU) lines away from that network and onto their BT-based platform.

Last week’s announcement that O2 UK were to close their wholesale division (BE/O2Wholesale) in February 2014 (here) has naturally caused problems for ISPs that offer broadband via the platform. Aquiss have now become one of the first to confirm the discontinuation of related services pending a replacement.

The final RootMetrics study of Mobile Broadband speeds in London, which conducted more than 86,000 tests across the city, has confirmed that EE remain the fastest operator for mobile Internet performance thanks to their comparatively advanced 4G (LTE at 1800MHz) network. By contrast O2, Three UK and Vodafone were well off the pace.

Mobile operator O2 UK (Telefonica) has confirmed that its O2/BE Wholesale platform, which was retained after Sky (Sky Broadband) gobbled up the providers fixed line broadband and phone customers earlier this year, will now be closed in February 2014.

Customers of O2 UK have been told to wave “goodbye” to their free email / webmail service because the operator intends to close the accounts for “all mobile customers” on 1st November 2013. The service, which was once offered to all of their subscribers, is apparently no longer popular enough to be worth maintaining.

A huge fire that began on Friday morning at the JBJ Business Park on Northampton Road (England), which took place at a PoP near to the Blisworth Telephone Exchange, has resulted in a major loss of local broadband Internet connectivity. It has also affected telecoms services to 16 other exchanges in the region.

The latest preliminary RootMetrics study of Mobile Broadband performance in London (England), which conducted more than 11,000 tests across the city, has revealed that EE continues to deliver the best Internet speeds despite the recent launch of O2 and Vodafone’s new 4G (LTE) based networks.

Mobile operators O2 and Vodafone, which have a joint network sharing deal (here), will today switch-on their first superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband networks using the new 800MHz frequency band in London (England). Both operators have a similar rollout plan and packages (albeit with different content offers).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) have quietly updated their FAQ pages with more information about the forthcoming migration of O2 UK and BE Broadband fixed line ISP customers, which was previously expected to begin during the “autumn“. We now know that this process will start in October 2013 and should end sooner than expected.

Business ISP Andrews and Arnold (AAISP) has confirmed that they’ve started moving “a lot of” BE/O2 Wholesale broadband lines over to their other back-haul carrier (TalkTalk Wholesale), which has primarily been caused by a loss of customers and related “uncertainty over the Sky take over“.

Customers of Sky Broadband (plus those of many other UK ISPs) should now be able to access the Radio Times, Crystal Palace FC, Taylor Swift and over 100 other legitimate websites after providers resolved a problem in their court-ordered internet censorship system that occurred because Rights Holders failed to check the data.

Mobile operator O2 UK (O24G) has finally revealed the price and package details for their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network, which is due to go live on 29th August 2013. Unfortunately the new tariffs leave much to be desired, at least where data allowances are concerned.

Customers of BE Broadband, which is now owned by BSkyB (Sky Broadband), have been told that Sky intends to “recreate BE on their own network as a premium service“, which will based off their top Fibre Unlimited Pro (76Mbps) FTTC product with a few extras bolted-on top.

An interesting new study from social media analyst WaveMetrix has taken a look at the United Kingdom’s biggest broadband ISPs to discover which gives the best support via Twitter. The study found that good support is about more than being the fastest to reply. Just ask Virgin Media, which wasn’t the fastest like Sky Broadband but still did well.

Mobile operator O2 (O24G) look set to be the first to take on EE’s rival network after announcing a 29th August 2013 launch date and the first roll-out locations for their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network, which eventually aims to reach 98% of the UK population (indoor and outdoor).

Sky Broadband (BSkyB) has officially leapfrogged Virgin Media to become the country’s second largest consumer broadband ISP after it saw a sharp acceleration of growth by gobbling up O2’s fixed line subscribers. As a result Sky’s latest Q2-2013 report saw related customers grow by +519,000 in the quarter to total 4.906m (up from +152k added in Q1).
