RootMetrics has published its latest biannual study of Mobile Broadband (3G and 4G) performance across the city of London (England), which conducted 88,670 tests during March 2014 to reveal that EE still deliver the fastest download (17.8Mbps) and upload (9.3Mbps) speeds. But rivals O2, Three UK and Vodafone are improving.

Mobile operator O2 UK might have sold off their fixed line Home Broadband and Phone customers to Sky Broadband (BSkyB) last year, yet a new 5-year partnership extension deal signed with BT Wholesale today means that the business side of their service(s) will continue to be expanded via a “fully-integrated suite of ICT services” to include mobile, Ethernet and FTTC “fibre broadband for the very first time“.

Eurotunnel has today confirmed that Le Shuttle and High Speed Train commuters travelling along the Channel Tunnel (North Tunnel) route, which links the UK to France, can now access 2G and 3G based mobile phone and mobile broadband connectivity via EE and Vodafone (O2 will soon follow) thanks to a new fibre optic based GSP-P retransmission system. 4G is coming soon.

The UK Advertising Standards Authority has once again had to ban two adverts for O2’s mobile Internet data roaming tariff (O2 Travel) after it claimed to offer “a day’s data for £1.99 … whatever you get up to on the continent“, which failed to mention the small matter of a 15MB usage cap.

Mobile operator O2 (O24G) has announced that their new 4G (LTE at 800MHz) based Mobile Broadband network can now cover 41% of the United Kingdom’s outdoor population (around 33% for indoor users) in 191 Towns and Cities, which apparently equates to about 20 million people.

RootMetrics has today published their H2 2013 Rootscore Report, which uses data collected from 840,000 network and speed tests conducted across the United Kingdom to reveal which mobile operator is best for Internet access, calls and texting. Suffice to say that EE topped the table in all respects, while Vodafone was almost always at the bottom.

It took a few months but mobile operator Vodafone has finally passed Ofcom’s coverage obligation for 3G based Mobile Broadband coverage, which requires all of the markets major MNOs to provide related network coverage in the 2100MHz band to at least 90% of the UK population.

Global financial services firm UBS has triggered an uplift in BSkyB’s (Sky Broadband) stock price after suggesting that the company could merge its European pay-TV assets to form Sky Europe and or then pick-up a mobile operator by merging O2 (Telefonica UK) or Vodafone UK into their operations.

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) has banned a Twitter tweet advert from O2 UK after it misleadingly claimed that customers using their Mobile Broadband connection to roam while travelling around Europe would only need to pay £1.99 for a day’s worth of data usage, which failed to mention the tiny usage allowance.
