Virgin Media O2 UK See Success of Digital Phone Switch and Telecare Trial

Broadband ISP Virgin Media (O2) has today released a progress update on their Digital Landline Switchover (DLS) programme (i.e. migrating old analogue landline phones to IP-based services). This revealed some positive results from their recent trial with the telecare advisory body, TSA, which provided enhanced support to telecare users.

Ofcom UK Warns One Touch Switching Laggard ISPs to Get Onboard UPDATE

The UK telecoms regulator has warned that they are “prepared to take action” against broadband ISPs that have failed to adopt the new One Touch Switching (OTS) process, which went live on 12th Sept 2024 and aims to make it easier and quicker for consumers to change provider. But not every ISP has joined, which is causing some consumers to struggle with switching.

BT Wholesale, which supplies a number of UK ISPs with broadband services, has confirmed to ISPreview that they’re investigating an issue with consumer switching between providers via the One Touch Switching (OTS) process that appears to have been introduced on Monday and is disrupting some ISP switches and internet connections.

Ofcom Put NOW, EE and O2 on Naughty Step for UK Telecoms Complaints – Q2 2024

Ofcom has published their latest Q2 2024 study of UK consumer complaints, which names and shames NOW Broadband (NOW TV) for being the worst provider by attracting the most complaints about broadband, while EE did the same for landline phone and O2 took most flak mobile. Finally, both EE and Virgin Media were jointly on the naughty step for Pay TV.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published the final draft auction regulations for its plan to auction off a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmW) radio spectrum frequency in the 26GHz and 40GHz bands, which will be used by mobile operators to deliver faster 5G (mobile broadband) services – mostly in urban areas.

The Competition and Markets Authority has today appeared to give a “provisional” approval to Vodafone and Three UK’s recently tabled commitments (here) under their proposed merger (here), which were intended to placate concerns that the deal could result in a “Significant Lessening of Competition” (SLC) in the mobile market. SICOM Looks to Expand UK Dark Fibre Network for Businesses

October 2024 Progress Update on BT’s 10Mbps UK Broadband USO

UK ISP BT has published the final biannual progress update for 2024 on their delivery of Ofcom’s somewhat maligned 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The ISP has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 8,248 premises (up from 7,954 in April 2024), with 215 further builds in-progress (down from 265).

New UK Broadband Switching System Now Fully in Control, But Some ISPs Not Ready

The new, if still imperfect, One Touch Switching (OTS) system, which is Ofcom’s solution for making it quicker and easier for consumers to switch between broadband ISPs and phone providers, is now fully in control after the old backstop (NoT+) system was decommissioned today. But some issues remain with customer matching and ISP support.

Ofcom to Take on Regulation of Premium Rate Phone Services in 2025

The UK telecoms and media regulator, Ofcom, has today confirmed that they will be taking on the responsibility for day-to-day regulation of Premium Rate Services (PRS) – effectively transferring them from the Phone-Paid Services Authority (PSA) – on 1st February 2025.

New UK Petition Calls for “Loyalty Tax” on Broadband Contracts to be Banned

A new petition, which has already been signed by over 56,200 people across the UK, has called on Ofcom to tackle the issue of “loyalty penalties” by changing the rules so that existing broadband ISP customers can access the same offers as new ones and that any end-of-contract price increases be “limited to a maximum of 30% of their current contract price“.

Broadband ISP and mobile operator Vodafone UK has today announced the results of two recent 5G trials using a large chunk of millimetre wave (mmWave) radio spectrum, which managed to deliver home broadband (FWA) connectivity peak speeds of up to 4Gbps (dropping to 2.8Gbps in a more traditional mobile environment).

Ofcom Survey Finds Growth in Unlimited UK Mobile Data Tariffs

Ofcom has published the results from a new survey that is intended to help monitor how well the UK mobile market is functioning and whether it continues to deliver good outcomes. For example, the work reveals that unlimited data (broadband) tariffs accounted for 13% of mobile plans in 2023 (up from 5% in 2019), but plans with smaller allowances are now less common.

The letter confirms their intention to decommission the old consumer ISP switching system (NoT+) on 24th October this week in favour of their new One Touch Switching (OTS) system, which is said to be “working well“.

Survey Finds Average UK Broadband Users Save £105 a Year by Switching ISP

A new survey of 5,083 UK adult consumers, which was conducted by Which?, has claimed that the average broadband-only ISP customer could save £105 per year by switching to a new provider and those switching from BT, Sky Broadband or Virgin Media saved even more – up to £165 on average for a Virgin customer. It’s a similar story for mobile and TV users.
