The Scottish National Party (Pàrtaidh Nàiseanta na h-Alba) yesterday offered a preview of their forthcoming 2024 Manifesto for the UK General Election, which among other things promised to extend their idea of a social tariff for energy providers to also include broadband and mobile services. But the latter already exists.

Industry trade body Mobile UK, which represents Three UK, EE (BT), O2 (Virgin Media) and Vodafone, has joined with the Mobile Infrastructure Forum (MIF) to set out a series of recommendations for how the next government can tackle an “underfunded and under resourced planning system” to “unlock growth and get Britain fully connected” to the latest 4G, 5G and future 6G networks.

The UK Labour Party has today published their Manifesto for the forthcoming 2024 General Election, which is due to be held on 4th July 2024. As usual, ISPreview has taken a quick dive into the document to see what the party may be planning in terms of their broadband, mobile and internet related policies.

The UK Liberal Democrats have today become the first big political party to publish their manifesto for the 2024 General Election (4th July), which includes a couple of broadband and internet related commitments. But as usual with these things, there’s a lack of detail in terms of funding and timescales etc.

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has issued a technical update on their investigation into the UK’s public cloud infrastructure services market, which is currently dominated by Amazon (AWS) and Microsoft (Azure). As part of this, the CMA hints that they’re “not currently minded to prioritise further consideration of structural or operational separation remedies” (e.g. divestment).

Broadband ISP Andrews & Arnold (AAISP) has come up with an interestingly quirky way of addressing concerns that Ofcom’s new, and much delayed, One Touch Switch (OTS) system, which aims to make it quicker and easier for consumers to switch internet providers, might make SLAMMING easier (i.e. being switched without your consent).

A seemingly fairly new network operator called Frogfoot Networks has revealed that they’re planning to deploy a new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network across the United Kingdom, with England, Wales and Scotland being part of their “initial deployment” that will “predominantly serve residential homes and small businesses.”

The UK telecoms, internet and media regulator, Ofcom, has today hit broadband ISP BT (including subsidiaries EE and Plusnet) with a fine of £2.8 million, which occurred after their investigation found the operator had “failed to provide” 1.1 million customers with clear and simple contract information before signing up to a new deal.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published a new paper that sets out its options and vision for how the upper 6GHz radio spectrum band (6425 to 7125MHz) could potentially be released and then shared between both 5G mobile (mobile broadband) and Wi-Fi networks (e.g. home WiFi).

A new Opinium survey of 2,004 UK adults, which was commissioned by Uswitch.com and conducted between 16th April 2024 to 22nd April 2024, has claimed that broadband ISP customers who haven’t switched for 7-8 years are the worst off, paying on average £22.10 extra a month. The situation is almost as bad for mobile users’ too.

Mobile operator Three UK (Hutchinson 3G) has asked Ofcom to make a useful technical change to its existing licence for the 3.9GHz (3925 – 4009MHz) spectrum band, which is held by sibling UK Broadband Ltd. The change, if approved, would enable them to use this with 5G technology to boost their Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) packages.

New research from Ofcom, which surveyed 1,104 UK adults aged 18+ during November 2023, has suggested that 83% of UK people who had looked for information about debt support ended up turning to their broadband, landline and or mobile provider for it. More often than not, they found what they were looking for.

The UK media and telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published an interesting new report for the Government that examines the future of TV distribution in an increasing broadband (internet) connected world and proposes how to address the inevitable tipping point – where Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) services risk become too expensive to sustain.

A recent Freedom of Information Request (FoIR) filed by Broadband Genie has revealed that complaints to Ofcom about UK telecoms providers (broadband, mobile etc.) increased by 37% last year to 34,000. In response, the comparison site has published a new survey of customer service, which sees YouFibre, Trooli and Zen Internet top the table.

The telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has formally served a statutory information request to check up on UK ISPs and progress in the One Touch Switching Company (TOTSCo), which is responsible for implementing the regulator’s heavily delayed One Touch Switch (OTS) migration system for faster consumer broadband ISP switching.

The little known and rather generically named Altnet ISP UK Fibre Networks, which since 2019 has operated a Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in the centre of York (England), appears to be preparing to expand their fibre and fixed wireless network into new areas of the city, as well as Bath, Harrogate, Chester, and rural villages.

UK ISP BT has today published the latest biannual progress update on their delivery of Ofcom’s flaky 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband. The internet provider has so far helped to build a USO connection to over 7,954 premises (up from 7,681 in Oct 2023), with 265 further builds in-progress (up from 185).
