Ofcom has today published several new documents on their efforts to make more radio spectrum available for use by satellite broadband services, which includes an update on their plan to release part of the 28GHz band, a proposal to make spectrum in the Q, V and E bands available and a proposal to grant Kepler an earth station licence.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today finalised new rules – due to be enforced from 1st October 2024 – that will require mobile network operators, such as Three UK, Vodafone, EE and O2 (inc. MVNO operators), to protect consumers who travel abroad from mobile BILL SHOCKS on data (broadband), call and text charges.

The UK Government has today proposed a series of recommendations to help “bolster the resilience” of the 999 emergency call handling system, which is operated by BT, following a technical fault (“complex software issue”) last summer (here) that resulted in 11,470 unique emergency calls being “unsuccessfully connected“.

The UK telecoms regulator has today launched an own-initiative investigation into Vonage‘s internet phone (VoIP / Cloud) service, which follows an incident resulting in disruption for its business customers to emergency call (999) services during October and November 2023.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today concluded its investigation into Openreach’s Quality of Service (i.e. minimum standards for repairs and new line provision) targets, which found that they “failed to meet, by narrow margins,” 3 out of 35 of the QoS standards in the leased lines (Ethernet) and local wholesale broadband markets.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has responded to a call by East Riding Council for them to conduct an “emergency review” of the situation around poles and KCOM’s infrastructure sharing in Hull. But the regulator says its powers to stop such works are limited and that no rival had raised a formal dispute about KCOM, yet.

The UK Digital Infrastructure Minister, Julia Lopez, has published a new letter to “telecoms firms” (Virgin Media, Openreach and KCOM etc.) that calls for them to “limit installation of telegraph poles” when deploying new fibre broadband networks because they risk upsetting communities by “inappropriately or unnecessarily throwing up new infrastructure.”

The UK Government’s Digital Infrastructure Minister, Julia Lopez, has revealed that she will next week hold a roundtable with colleagues, as well as Ofcom, to discuss rising community complaints against the use of broadband poles and wireless masts to deliver digital infrastructure. But this time, some action may follow.

A new study by Broadband Genie, which harnesses data from actual consumer migrations, has claimed that there was a decrease of 38% in broadband ISP switches during the period of 15th December 2023 to 12th February 2024 and as a result UK bill payers are estimated to be £53m worse off in lost savings.
