UK Gov Moots Faster Broadband ISP Switching and Contract Tweaks

The Government has today launched a new consultation that seeks feedback on a number of consumer protection measures, which among other things could introduce faster switching between ISPs and make it easier to cancel contracts online.

The CEO of BT Group, Gavin Patterson, has lost out on a bonus worth £290,000 due to a rise in customer complaints, but don’t feel too bad for him as his pay for 2015 still increased to £5.4m from £4.6m in 2014. Meanwhile Chairman Sir Mike Rake has agreed to stay on until “at least” September 2017.

NextGenAccess UK Moots Rural Fibre Broadband Expansion for SMEs

London-based ISP NextGenAccess has hinted at plans to expand its fibre optic based broadband network into more areas that are currently outside the coverage of the BT’s UK FTTC/P roll-out, with a particular reference being made to “rural areas and non-city centre data centres and technology hubs.”

The United Kingdom’s telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed to add an extra sub-band to the 5GHz radio spectrum band used by many internal home WiFi wireless networks, which would increase the number of 80MHz channels available from 4 to 6 and deliver faster speeds.

Advert Watchdog Forces ISPs to Include Line Rental into Broadband Price

The Advertising Standards Authority has today confirmed that fixed line broadband providers in the United Kingdom will, with effect from 31st October 2016, be required to offer clearer advertising of their service prices by including the cost of line rental into their total monthly fee.

Industry sources have reportedly revealed that Cityfibre are working with BT (Openreach) to test a major deployment of Ofcom’s newly proposed Duct and Pole Access (DPA) solution, which could help ISPs to build alternative networks by giving them better access to BT’s cable ducts and poles.

The UK telecoms regulator is consulting on a request from TalkTalk to vary concurrent spectrum access licences for 3.3MHz of radio spectrum in the 1800MHz band, which would support the ISP’s plan to launch a new broadband router with small cell based 4G (LTE) mobile femtocell technology inside.

EU Clears Ofcom Plan for BT Dark Fibre, Lower Prices and Faster Installs

As expected the European Commission has approved Ofcom’s Business Connectivity Market Review 2016 (BCMR) proposals, which among other things pledged to open up access to BT’s national Dark Fibre network, cut leased line (Ethernet) prices and deliver quicker installations. But the regulator did reject two of the EC’s proposed tweaks.

Ofcom UK Considers Allowing 3.8GHz to 4.2GHz Spectrum Sharing

The telecoms regulator has today published a new Spectrum Sharing Framework and opened a consultation (Call for Input) to investigate whether radio spectrum in the 3.8GHz to 4.2GHz bands should be shared. The bands are currently used by satellite earth stations, fixed links and by the wireless provider UK Broadband Ltd.

Ed Vaizey MP Moots “Gigabit Britain” for 2025 and 10Mbps USO by 2018

The Government’s Digital Economy Minister, Ed Vaizey, has told a select committee inquiry into digital connectivity that he would expect to start seeing “gigabit” (1000Mbps+) speed broadband from 2020-25 and that the 10Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) should be “coming on stream” towards the end of 2017 or 2018.
