Ofcom has announced that Broadband Fixed Wireless Access (BFWA) ISPs that make use of the 28GHz radio spectrum band, such as Urban Wimax and Cable & Wireless UK, will now be able to keep the licence “indefinitely” (i.e. they were due to expire on 31st December 2015) but there will be a cost.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has warned that today’s move by Ofcom (here), which has created the “opportunity” for 10 new Freeview HD TV channels to be launched by using airwaves in the 600MHz radio spectrum band, could hinder the plan to free up existing 700MHz spectrum for use by future ultra-fast 5G based Mobile Broadband services.

The latest ISPreview.co.uk poll of 536 website visitors has revealed that almost two thirds of respondents find the current process of switching between home broadband ISPs to be confusing and 93% support Ofcom’s (telecoms regulator) efforts to simplify the system. Ofcom has today proposed several new measures that would effectively force BT to cut the cost of their fixed line wholesale broadband services (WLR, SMPF, MPF) to Internet providers (ISP) and redefine which parts of the United Kingdom (UK) should be subject to related regulation or indeed de-regulation.

Ofcom has confirmed that they’re considering a “difficult to assess” request by Sky Broadband (BSkyB) for BT to offer a new unbundled (LLU) superfast broadband (FTTC) product, which would most likely give UK ISPs more control and price flexibility over their services.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today officially allowed Mobile Network Operators (MNO) in the United Kingdom to repurpose their existing radio spectrum (specifically 900MHz, 2100MHz and 1800MHz) for use by the new generation of superfast 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband services.

The National Audit Office (NAO) has given its approval to Ofcom’s recent auction of 4G (LTE) based Mobile Broadband spectrum (800MHz and 2.6GHz), which some had criticised for only being able to raise £2.368bn (about £1bn less than the government had initially hoped for).

The national UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today launched a new consultation that proposes to boost competition for superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) services by cutting the wholesale cost of switching between ISPs on BT’s network to £10-£15 and slashing contract lengths for migrations to just 1 month. BTOpenreach will also face stiffer rules.

Mobile and Internet provider EE UK (Orange) has once again been shamed by Ofcom’s latest quarterly customer complaints report (Q1-2013), which highlighted their home broadband service as having the largest number of disgruntled customers among all of the biggest ISPs. But they did improve from Q4-2012.

It’s been a long time coming but the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has informed ISPreview.co.uk that their chosen method for making it both “simpler and more reliable” for consumers to switch phone or broadband ISP is finally close to being announced.
