The European Commission (EC) has published its official proposal for the construction of a new EU Single Telecoms Market, which promises even cheaper mobile roaming charges, stricter guidelines to help safeguard open internet access (Net Neutrality) and new measures to boost superfast broadband development.

Ofcom has today published the results of a year-long study, which was conducted by Kantar Media, into how and why Internet users access music, films, TV shows, software, books and video games online (both legally and illegally). It found that 17% of Internet users infringed copyright online but only 2% were responsible for 74% all piracy by volume.

Ofcom are currently prepping their autumn 2013 pilot of Wi-Fi style White Space (IEEE 802.22) wireless broadband technology and have today launch a new consultation to examine the potential interference issues of using this alongside existing Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) channels in the 470MHz – 790MHz (UHF TV) band.

The communications regulator has today published a new guide that aims to help people understand how mobile and fixed broadband ISPs use Traffic Management to balance their network load during periods of peak network usage. But stricter guidelines might soon follow because only 11% of consumers know what it actually means.

The telecoms regulator has today published its latest Telecoms Market Data Tables Q1-2013 update and revealed that the United Kingdom is now home to 21,890,000 fixed line broadband ISP connections (excludes corporate lines), which is up by +210,000 in the quarter (lower than the +356,000 added in Q4-2012).

The little known Internet provider Etico Solutions, which is based at the same address as long defunct ISPs EurISP and Aspire Internet (related news here and here), has escaped punishment from Ofcom after the regulator opened an investigation into their alleged failure to supply customers with a broadband migration code upon request.

The UK telecoms regulator has today issued a correction to its original July 2013 proposal (here) that would force BT into reducing the cost of their fixed line wholesale broadband services (WLR, SMPF, MPF) to ISPs. The changes represent only a small price difference of a few pence to a few pounds but then the original proposal wasn’t huge either.

The UK communications regulator has today published a new GFK study into the performance of their Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) consumer complaint handler schemes, which found that only 25% of fixed broadband ISP customers that were considered eligible to use an ADR were actually aware of it.

Ofcom’s proposal to introduce a new harmonised Gaining Provider Led (GPL) solution for swapping broadband and phone provider has been given a warm welcome by most ISPs. But some providers’ fear that they could be left to chase vanishing customers for payments or that the system may soon end up being out of date.

The UK telecoms regulator has today revealed their chosen method for making it “simpler and more reliable” for consumers to switch phone or broadband ISP. As expected Ofcom has decided to adopt a Gaining Provider-Led (GPL) switching process that will put most of the power into the hands of your new provider instead of the old one.

Mobile operator and ISP EE (Everything Everywhere) looks set to follow Sky Broadband and some other ISPs by quietly increasing the advertised download rate (“typical speed“) of their standard (ADSL2+) based packages “up to” 16Mbps (Megabits per second).

Ofcom has published its latest biannual report into the real-world performance of fixed line broadband ISP speeds in the United Kingdom, which found that the average internet download rate had climbed to 14.7Mbps (Megabits per second) and that’s up from 12Mbps six months earlier (+22%). But rural areas continue to suffer from slow speeds.

Ofcom has refused to apply “interim measures” that could have forced BSkyB to provide its Sky Sports 1 and 2 TV channels to BT’s YouView (IPTV) based platform on “fair terms“. Meanwhile the investigation into BT’s initial competition complaint against Sky will continue.

Ofcom has published their annual 2013 Communications Market Report, which covers everything about the United Kingdom’s media and telecom industries. The study reveals that NGA / superfast broadband (30Mbps+) ISP services are now available to 73% of the country (up from 65% last year) and uptake has surged to 17.5% (up from just 6.5%) or 3.8 million subscribers.

Ofcom has confirmed that the 800MHz radio spectrum band will this week be made completely clear of the old Digital Terrestrial TV (DTTV) services that use to inhabit it. The move means that major mobile operators from around the United Kingdom can now launch their 4G (LTE) services in the same band.
