The government’s plan to discourage online copyright infringement in the UK by forcing broadband ISPs to issue warning Notification Letters to customers whom are suspected of engaging in internet piracy, a process that is due to get underway in H1-2014, could be less effective than hoped.

The communications regulator has today published a new report that outlines the availability of different communications services across the United Kingdom. In particular it finds that “standard broadband” services (i.e. HEADLINE speeds of at least 2Mbps) are now available to 95.3% of households and superfast (30Mbps+) to 67.9% .

National UK telecoms operator BT has said that they “completely refute the basis” of a controversial new TalkTalk commissioned study into its superfast broadband charges as bearing “little resemblance to the actual costs incurred“.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today published its latest Telecoms Market Data Tables Q4 2012 update and confirmed that the United Kingdom is now home to 22,174,000 21,680,000 fixed line broadband ISP connections (excluding corporate lines), which is up sharply by +659,000 +356,00 in the quarter.

A leaked TalkTalk commissioned report from German analyst Wik Consult has predicted that take-up of superfast broadband (FTTC / P) services on BT’s (Openreach) platform will reach a “maximum” of 65% of addressable customers by 2019 and Virgin Media will hit 100% in 2017. But are BT’s prices anti-competitive?

Prospect, which claims to be an independent union for professionals like engineers, scientists and managers, has warned that Ofcom’s new TalkTalk supported investigation into BT’s “alleged margin squeeze in superfast broadband pricing” could damage investment in the UK telecoms network.

BT has said that its “disappointed” after the UK communications regulator, Ofcom, responded to a competition complaint from rival ISP TalkTalk by opening an investigation into whether or not the operator was “abusing a dominant position” in its supply of superfast broadband (FTTC and FTTP) services.

BTOpenreach, which maintains BT’s national telecoms network, has tweaked the prices that ISPs and other communications providers must pay for line rental (LLU and WLR), missed appointments, aborted engineer visits and unbundled line migrations. Some charges are more expensive while others are a little cheaper.

Ofcom has today called upon the UK telecoms industry to take part in its forthcoming autumn 2013 pilot of White Space (IEEE 802.22) wireless broadband technology, which harnesses the unused radio spectrum that exists between Digital Terrestrial TV channels to deliver wifi style connectivity over a wide area.

The national telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today issued a new “scoping document” (call for inputs) that will help to determine how existing radio spectrum in the UHF 700MHz (Digital TV) frequency band could be freed up for use by the next (5th) generation of future ultra-fast 5G based Mobile Broadband services.

Ofcom’s latest annual Adults Media Use and Attitudes Report 2013 reveals that internet use is continuing to rise but sadly 15% of the UK population still do not have the internet at home and 85% of those claimed this was due to a “lack of interest” (23% said cost and 19% pointed to the lack of a computer or related kit).

Budget ISP TalkTalk has once again got itself into hot water with the national communications regulator, Ofcom, which has today fined the provider £750,000 for making an “excessive number” of abandoned and silent calls to potential customers during 2011.

The National Audit Office (NAO), which is responsible for scrutinising public spending on behalf of Parliament, has confirmed that it will investigate whether or not Ofcom’s underperforming auction of the 4G (LTE) based 800MHz and 2.6GHz mobile broadband spectrum has delivered “value-for-money“.

The UK telecoms regulator has today proposed a series of “major changes” to how phone call charges are handled, which is designed to make the cost of calling businesses and services clearer for consumers (focus on 08, 09 and 118 numbers). Calls to 080 numbers could also become free from “all telephones” including mobile.

BTOpenreach, which manages access to BT’s national broadband and phone network in the United Kingdom, has published “substantial price reductions” of up to 50% for its 100Mbps to 10Gbps capable Ethernet and Leased Line services to business customers, ISPs and mobile operators.
