The BT Group has published their Q1 2022/23 results to June 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network reach 7.957 million premises (up by a record of 763K in the quarter vs 752K last quarter). Meanwhile, EE’s 5G network now reaches 55% of the UK population.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has this afternoon formally served notice for strike action against UK telecoms and broadband ISP giant BT (inc. Openreach), which will take place on Friday 29th July and Monday 1st August 2022. Up to around 38,000 workers could potentially go on strike, although exact figures may be less.

The Communications Workers Union (CWU) has today, after BT rejected this week’s last minute talks proposal to reach a compromise agreement over pay, said they will formally serve notice on the UK telecoms and broadband ISP giant (inc. Openreach) of their intention to launch the first national strike in 35 years.

Ofcom’s latest Q1 2022 study of UK consumer complaints has revealed that ISP Shell Energy attracted the most moans for both fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Virgin Mobile did the same for Pay Monthly mobile services and Virgin Media were also on the naughty step for Pay TV.

The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) has announced that its long-running campaign, which uses the High Court to force major UK broadband ISPs into blocking websites that are suspected of facilitating copyright infringement (internet piracy), is being extended to mobile operators – starting with EE (BT).

The Communications Workers Union (CWU), which represents c. 40,000 staff at the UK telecoms and broadband ISP giant BT (inc. Openreach), has today – following a dispute over pay – voted to hit the operator with its first national strike in 35 years. Delays to service provision are expected, unless a last minute deal can be done.

UK ISP BT recently announced that it intended to become the flagship brand for their Enterprise and Global units, while EE would focus on their consumer packages (here). The operator has today unveiled a new Charter for its 1.2 million business and public sector customers, which sets out their blueprint for a new range of initiatives and growth.

Ofcom has published their 2022 survey of UK broadband ISP and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest providers. For example, Vodafone attracted the lowest satisfaction for broadband (77%), while BT secured the highest (88%). But overall, service quality has improved since COVID-19.

The BT Group has published their Q4 2021/22 results to March 2022, which saw the coverage of Openreach’s gigabit Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network grow by a record 752,000 premises in the quarter (up from +662K last quarter) to total 7.2 million. The operator also signed an FTTP co-provisioning deal with Sky Broadband.

Ofcom has proposed to tweak their 2019 voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which will extend the current ‘Right to Exit‘ (i.e. when an ISP fails to correct a problem with broadband speeds) to the latest definition of service bundles. It will also require FTTP and cable ISPs to provide details on observed line speeds.

In a sign of things to come, it’s interesting to note that the recent free trade agreement between Australia and the United Kingdom included measures that require both sides to provide injunctive relief for website blocking by broadband ISPs – targeted at sites that are found to be facilitating internet copyright infringement (piracy).

Ofcom has today posted some additional analysis on the impact of their End-of-Contract Notifications (ECN) system, which reveals that customer re-contracting on major broadband ISPs has increased as a result of its introduction – varying from a rise of 13% on Plusnet to just 3% on TalkTalk.

Customers of Plusnet’s business broadband packages have recently begun to notice that the ISP has not been delivering on their pledge of offering “dedicated 24/7 UK based customer support“, with some users complaining that their phone lines close down after 8pm – the same time as the weekday cut-off for residential support.

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has today announced another shake-up of its branding, which in simple terms will see EE – over time – become the “flagship brand for our consumer customers” (i.e. converged broadband and mobile plans etc.) and BT become the flagship brand for their Enterprise and Global units.
