Openreach (BT) has just published a new update to the UK rollout plan for their gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network, which appears to add around 170 new locations (towns and villages) as part of their £15bn project to cover 25 million premises by December 2026.

Following a probe (here), the Competition and Markets Authority has decided to open a formal investigation into Motorola’s dual role within the delivery of the UK Government’s new 4G based Emergency Services Network (ESN) contract, which it fears could result in a “more expensive service for customers and, ultimately, the taxpayer“.

The Enterprise M3 Local Enterprise Partnership (EM3LEP) has begun inviting private sector firms to express an interest in bidding for work on their plan to build and operate a new 94km long “full fibre” network, which aims to help deliver gigabit-capable broadband to business and communities across Surrey and Hampshire.

The County Councils Network (CCN), which is a cross-party special interest group of the Local Government Association (LGA) – representing 36 of England’s councils, has published a new report that warns of a growing divide in “gigabit-capable broadband” (1Gbps) coverage between urban cities and the “rural shires“.

UK ISP Quickline has launched a new website called ‘Connected Yorkshire’, which will act as a central hub for information on their state aid supported Superfast North Yorkshire (SFNY) phase 4 “superfast broadband” rollout project with NYnet and the North Yorkshire County Council (NYCC). The Broadband Delivery UK team have today launched a second batch of Open Market Reviews (OMR) for additional parts of England covered by Phase 2 of the Government’s new £5bn Project Gigabit broadband roll-out. This aims to identify any existing or planned commercial coverage by gigabit ISP networks.

In an unsurprising move, Ordnance Survey (OS) has confirmed that they’re working with Atkins to build the UK Government’s new National Underground Asset Register (NUAR), which is a digital map of underground pipes (water etc.) and cables (broadband, power etc.) that could help reduce accidental damage.

This attempts to understand the future wireless connectivity needs of the UK and how they can better support 5G mobile, as well as future satellite, IoT and 6G broadband technologies.

The UK Government has today revealed that 1,084 schools in rural areas have now been connected to a gigabit-capable “full fibre” network as a result of the investment they started in 2019, which is continuing under their new £5bn Project Gigabit scheme. A further 884 schools are planned to be connected by March 2022.

Gigaclear’s state aid backed rollout of a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in Essex, which forms part of the wider Superfast Essex (SFE) project, looks set to suffer another delay due to issues of “contractor resource, the Covid-19 pandemic, Brexit and the lack of availability of cabinets.”

The West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has, having decided not to wait any longer for the UK Government to solve the problem, moved to “ensure that all newly-built homes” have essential “full fibre” broadband services “ready for homeowners when they move in,” which it will do by developing new planning “guidance“.

The Fastershire project has revealed that UK ISP Gigaclear’s rollout of a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network in Herefordshire is suffering from “delivery challenges,” which without “significant additional resources” could make it difficult to reach up to 2,324 of the planned premises.
