O2 Seeking to Become UK’s First Net Zero Mobile Network

Mobile operator O2 has today announced that it aims to become the UK’s “first net zero mobile network.” As part of that they’ve pledged to remove carbon emissions from their entire business and network by the end of 2025, whilst also working with supply chain partners (e.g. Smartphone makers) to cut emissions by 30%.

UK Fibre Connectivity Forum Seeks Property Sector Engagement

The UK Fibre Connectivity Forum (UKFCF) is today “calling on” the property sector (house builders etc.) to work with network builders, operators and broadband ISPs to help deliver on the Government’s “gigabit-capable” ambitions by 2025, not least by getting infrastructure to where it’s needed and driving efficiencies.

Leeds City Council UK Sign £20.3m BT Full Fibre Rollout Deal

The Leeds City Council in Yorkshire has today signed a new £20.3m partnership with BT (Openreach), which will see the latter build a new local “full fibre” network to connect hundreds of schools, NHS and other public sector sites across the city. A new fund will also be setup to support community broadband initiatives.

Shropshire UK Opens Broadband Market Intelligence Review

The state aid supported Connecting Shropshire programme and unitary council, which alongside Openreach and Airband have so far extended the reach of “superfast broadband” (24-30Mbps+) connectivity to 68,472 additional premises, has invited ISPs to participate in a new broadband Market Intelligence Review (MIR).

New UK Homes Ombudsman’s Remit to Cover Broadband Speed

The UK Government has confirmed its intention to launch a ‘New Homes Ombudsman’ in order to protect homebuyers from “rogue” developers and their shoddy work, but if you look deep into the text this also appears to include tackling complaints related to “broadband performance.” Sadly the details are extremely vague.

H2 2019 – Full Fibre Broadband Covers 83% of New Build Homes

The latest independent H2 2019 analysis of broadband coverage among UK new build homes has indicated that 83% of houses constructed last year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 73% in 2018), which rises to 96% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (up from 95% last year).

Investment Firm Blackstone to Pump Money into UK Broadband

Global investment firm Blackstone is in the process of establishing a dedicated European infrastructure team, which among other things is looking for opportunities to invest billions of pounds into UK infrastructure upgrades including energy, water systems, transport and broadband ISP networks.

Devon and Somerset UK Launch New Broadband Procurement

After another slight delay the Connecting Devon and Somerset project last week launched their new procurement process (previously due by end of 2019), which aims to find a supplier that can help them to roll-out “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) across the remaining poorly served homes and businesses in both counties.

Gigabit Broadband Could Boost UK Economy by £13bn Come 2025

New research from the Internet Association, which was prepared by Public First, has claimed that the UK Government’s ambition to achieve universal coverage of “gigabit-capable broadband” (1Gbps+) ISP networks by 2025 could produce an economic boost equivalent to £217 per person per year or 0.7% of GDP (£13bn total).

Hampshire UK Look to Boost Rural Gigabit Broadband Vouchers

The Hampshire County Council (HCC) in England appears to have proposed a new scheme, which will help to improve broadband connectivity in the hardest to reach rural areas by committing £1m to “top up” funding under the Government’s rural voucher scheme (c.2-3% of premises are still without “superfast” speeds of 24Mbps+).

Cityfibre Begins FTTH Broadband Rollout in Adur and Worthing

Cityfibre has announced that they’ve begun their £25m project to roll-out a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband network across the District of Adur and Borough of Worthing in West Sussex, which is being supported by UK ISP partner Vodafone (with TalkTalk expected to follow later).

Good news, the Scottish Government‘s £25m 4G Infill Programme, which originally aimed to improve rural mobile coverage (mostly notspots across the Highlands and Islands) by building a network of 45 new masts for UK mobile operators to use (here), has finally built its first mast. Bad news, they’re well behind schedule.

Capita Win £6m Full Fibre Contract to Upgrade Norfolk UK

As well as securing a £7.5m four-year contract extension to continue providing network and IT services to Norfolk County Council (NCC) in England, Capita has today also announced that they’ve picked up the £6m contract to deploy a new “full fibre” network to reach local public sector sites.

Government Hand £65m to New UK 5G Mobile Broadband Trials

The UK Government has today announced £65m in public funding to help conduct “innovative” new R&D trials of 5G style applications and specific wireless broadband connectivity solutions, which among other things includes £30m for nine projects under the Rural Connected Communities (RCC) programme.

West Sussex UK Approve £20m Gigabit Broadband Expansion

The West Sussex County Council (WSCC) has approved a new public investment of £20 million (mostly funded by last year’s business rates deal) to support their new “Full Fibre Programme,” which aims to increase “full fibre” and maximise coverage of gigabit-capable broadband services across the county.
