The latest Q1 2017 figures from the Government’s £1.6bn+ Broadband Delivery UK project has revealed that some 4,426,493 additional premises across the United Kingdom can now order a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service as a result of their joint investment with local councils and the private sector.

The Trades Union Congress (TUC), which represents about 5.6 million British workers via 50 unions, has today published a new analysis of household debt that calls on the Government to push “a lot more” investment towards broadband and other areas in order to help tackle a shortage of well-paid jobs.

The Broadband Stakeholder Group, which is a think-tank for the UK Government, has published a new report from Analysys Mason that proposes a number of changes for making it easier and cheaper for telecoms operators to deploy ultrafast 5G Mobile and “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband networks.

The Party of Wales (Plaid Cymru) has this week published their Manifesto Action Plan for the 2017 UK General Election and committed to “making ultra-fast broadband available to all of Wales and rolling out 5G mobile signal nationwide.”

The Conservative Party has today joined Labour (here) and the Liberal Democrats (here) by publishing their own Manifesto for the 2017 UK General Election, although anybody looking for PM Theresa May to surprise us with a set of bold new pledges for broadband and mobile will be disappointed.

Yesterday it was the Labour Party (here) and today it’s the turn of the Liberal Democrats to publish their manifesto for the 2017 General Election, which aims to “ensure that every property in the UK” is provided with an unlimited 30Mbps (6Mbps upload) service by 2022 (plus 2Gbps FTTP?).

The UK Labour Party has today published the final version of their Manifesto for the General Election, which is broadly similar to last week’s leak but includes a few changes. One of those tweaks is an aspiration (not target) to roll-out 300Mbps broadband “across the UK within the next decade” (i.e. by 2027/28).

The European Commission has published their annual 2017 European Digital Progress Report, which confirms that Ireland, the United Kingdom, Belgium and Greece all lag behind the rest of the 28 EU member countries when it comes to ultrafast “full fibre” (FTTH/P/B) broadband coverage.

A confirmed leak of the Labour Party’s draft 2017 General Election Manifesto has revealed that Jeremy Corbyn will promise to deliver “universal superfast broadband availability” across the United Kingdom by 2022, which they’ve defined as offering a minimum speed of 30Mbps.

A leaked blueprint for the ‘Technical Capability‘ of the Government’s controversial new Investigatory Powers Act 2016, which will force broadband ISPs to log a much bigger slice of your Internet activity, has revealed that the smallest ISPs might escape but encryption is still at risk.

Last week’s entirely unsurprising decision by the Government to drop a proposed 30Mbps Universal Service Obligation (USO) for broadband, in favour of the originally proposed 10Mbps, has not gone down well with either the opposition Labour Party or SNP. Both have branded it a “missed opportunity.”

The Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) has today published a new report that makes 23 recommendations to help the Government roll-out future 5G Mobile services from 2020 and achieve “reliable universal coverage” of the United Kingdom by 2025. Easier said than done.

The Digital Economy Bill 2017 has today effectively been approved by both houses of parliament, which means positive changes for UK broadband connectivity (10Mbps USO, compensation etc.). On the other hand the internet faces more censorship and a proposed 30Mbps USO was dropped.
