A team of Japanese scientists working at Keio University have managed to develop a solution for “error-free” plastic (polymer) optical fibre cables, which can solve some of the cost, delay and heat generation problems that have tended to restrict their use. Data speeds of 53Gbps (Gigabits per second) were achieved.

The team working on Project Taara at Google’s X technology lab have successfully overcome traditional challenges with signal reliability to demonstrate a new laser-based wireless optical communications link that can deliver data at speeds of up to 20Gbps (Gigabits per second) over distances of up to 20 kilometres.

Manufacturing BT Hollow Core Fibre Cable

13th September, 2021 (0 Comments)

Telecoms giant BT and Lumenisity, a spin-out from Southampton University, has taken two of their recent developments in the UK and today combined them in order to conduct the “world’s first” trial of Quantum Key Distribution (QKD), a method of ultra-secure communications, over hollow core fibre optic cable.

The Sun - Solar Flare and CME

8th September, 2021 (17 Comments)

Once every 100 years or so our sun emits a massive Coronal Mass Ejection (CMEs) and these can be enough to cause damage to certain electrical systems, satellites and power grids etc. But a new study has also warned of an “internet apocalypse” because the next such event could knock out critical submarine fibre optic cables.

22nd August, 2021 (11 Comments)

A team of researchers, backed by LG Electronics (LG) and the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft research organisation, claim to have successfully demonstrated a candidate 6G mobile (mobile broadband) technology that was able to use the TeraHertz (THz) band to send data over a record outdoor distance of 100 metres.

30th July, 2021 (0 Comments)

The High Court has blocked a highly questionable crowd-funded legal challenge by the Action Against 5G campaign, which had been attempting to disrupt the rollout of ultrafast 5G (mobile broadband) services over fears that “radio-frequency radiation from masts and wireless devices puts health and life at risk.“

Scientists in Japan have just shattered last year’s world record for the fastest fibre optic internet data transfer speed by using a four core fibre cable to transmit data at 319Tbps (Terabits per second) over a whopping distance of 3001km, which compares with the previous record (here) of 178Tbps over 40km in London UK.

The UK Government has today announced that it will run for election to the governing council of the United Nations (UN) telecoms agency – the International Telecommunications Union (ITU) – in order to have more of a say in future standards (broadband technologies etc.) and the allocation of global spectrum (mobile etc.), among other things.

6th July, 2021 (5 Comments)

The 5G RuralDorset (5GRD) project, which is testing a mix of 5G based mobile technologies alongside existing fibre optic infrastructure, has announced the successful installation and testing of the “world’s first” in-field 700MHz based Standalone (SA) private 5G network to serve rural parts of the Jurassic Coast. But not for consumers.

Researchers at MIT’s Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics have tried to compare the estimated global data capacity of the four largest Low Earth Orbit (LEO) based ultrafast broadband satellite constellations – SpaceX (Starlink), Telesat, OneWeb, and Amazon (Kuiper). Interestingly, they end up closer than you might think.

A team of Toshiba’s scientists working at their Cambridge Research Laboratory in the UK have managed to extend the distance at which their quantum cryptography solution works in a fibre optic cable – Twin-Field Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) – from around a range of 100-200km to 600km.

Fiber optics network cable on technology background

1st June, 2021 (39 Comments)

BT has announced that they’ve begun trials of a new type of hollow core optical fibre cable at their BT Labs R&D facility in Adastral Park (Ipswich), which could in theory be more resistant to damage, while also delivering better performance (e.g. latency) for future broadband ISP and mobile connectivity services.

Senior Government MPs and Ofcom have backed a call by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) for the development of future 6G based mobile broadband technologies to prioritise societal benefits, instead of the usual focus on delivering “ever higher data [speeds] and ever higher spectrum bands.”

23rd March, 2021 (0 Comments)

A UK space technology firm called Open Cosmos has announced the successful launch of two commercial Low Earth Orbit (LEO) nano satellites, which are focused on the Internet of Things connectivity market and harness various 5G and Long Range Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) technologies.
