University of Surrey Kick Starts Research on Future 6G Mobile

The University of Surrey has launched the UK’s first 6th Generation Innovation Centre (6GIC), which will act as a “global research hub” to help develop future 6G based mobile broadband tech. Apparently this could take an “entirely new approach” from the tradition of pushing ever-higher data rates over ever-higher spectrum bands.

5G Mobile from Drones – Cambridge Consultants Hail New Antenna

Technology firm Cambridge Consultants (CC) and Stratospheric Platforms Limited (SPL) have collaborated to build a new kind of wireless antenna, which could be installed on aircraft (e.g. drones) operating at an altitude of 20,000 metres and used to distribute 5G mobile broadband services over areas up to 140km in diameter.

Court Clears £800m Sale of OneWeb’s LEO Broadband Satellites

The US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York has officially approved the £800m ($1bn) sale of OneWeb to the UK Government and Bharti Global (here), which paves the way for the satellite ISP to continue creating a constellation of 650 Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites for ultrafast low-latency broadband.

Ofcom Open 100GHz+ Bands for Short Range Wireless Links

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has announced that they’re making 18.2GHz worth of spectrum available in the 100-200GHz bands (116-122GHz, 174.8-182GHz and 185-190GHz), which they hope will help to foster the development of extremely fast high capacity data links over short distances, among other things.

BT and Toshiba Deploy First UK Industrial Quantum Secure Fibre Network

After years of development BT and Toshiba have today announced that they’ve made the UK’s first “industrial deployment” of a quantum-secure network using Openreach’s “standard” fibre optic infrastructure, which runs between the National Composites Centre (NCC) and the Centre for Modelling & Simulation (CFMS).

New Procedure Claims to Make Optical Fibre Cable 100x Cheaper

A small team of Brazilian and Australian researchers have come up with a new way of fabricating optical fibre cable, which borrows some technology from modern 3D printers and could be both significantly faster and “at least 100 times cheaper” than existing methods.

Scientists at the Optical Networks division of University College London (UCL) have successfully used experimental “hybrid discrete Raman and rare-earth doped fibre amplifiers” to achieve a record single core, single mode fibre throughput (net) speed of 178.08 Terabits per second over a distance of 40km.

COVID-19 5G Conspiracy Arsonist Gets 3 Years for Burning Mast

The Liverpool Crown Court has sentenced Michael Whitty (47) to three years in prison after he set fire to one of Vodafone UK’s 4G masts in Kirkby on 5th April 2020, which caused damage estimated to be worth up to £15,000. Whitty’s action was fuelled by a bonkers conspiracy theory that links the spread of COVID-19 to 5G.

Trading Standards to Halt Sales of £300 SCAM Anti-5G USB Stick

Researchers Push 44.2Tbps Over Fibre via a Single Light Source

Australian researchers from Monash, Swinburne and RMIT Universities have broken a new record after they hit a fibre optic data speed of 44.2 Terabits per second (Tbps) by using a single light source. Better yet this feat was achieved using 76.7km of existing Dark Fibre communications infrastructure, rather than a lab test.
