Lothian Broadband FTTP Street Dig

Scottish ISP Highland Broadband (HB), which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network across rural parts of the Highlands, has started to bring their new network to the first of 2,200 premises across Tain – a royal burgh and parish in the County of Ross. But other areas are also in their plans.

Aberdeen-based UK broadband and I.T solutions provider Internet for Business (IFB) has secured a new contract worth £300,000 that will see them support and deliver the rollout of a new full fibre network in the Scottish city, which aims to bring multi-gigabit speeds to 50 key Aberdeen City Council (ACC) education locations.

Openreach (BT) has announced that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network now covers just over 1 million properties in Scotland, which is up from 949,000 in late August 2023 and 800,000 in mid-March 2023. The operator has also revealed the 20 locations with the best “ultrafast broadband coverage” on their network.

Mobile operator O2 (VMO2) has today announced that, as part of the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) project to help boost 4G (mobile broadband) coverage across rural parts of the UK, they’ve begun improving their service on the remote Island of Islay (Scotland) by carrying a new mast to the location under a helicopter.

Network access provider CityFibre has updated on the progress of its work to roll-out a new 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across the city of Glasgow in Scotland, which started in 2021 and is costing c. £270m. The project is currently still due to be “substantially completed” by the end of 2025.

A new analysis of 265,572 consumer broadband ISP speed tests claims to have revealed the top fastest and slowest five areas, as well as five cities, across the United Kingdom. For example, the village of Halkirk in the Highlands of Scotland was named as the slowest area (2.8Mbps), while Canterbury came out as the slowest city (34.3Mbps).

The Building Digital UK agency has released their latest September 2023 progress update on the Government’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband rollout scheme, which is now running live contracts and procurements worth over £2bn in state aid (up from £1.4bn in July) to help extend coverage to an extra 1.1 million hard to reach premises.

Ofcom’s summer 2023 study of UK fixed broadband and mobile coverage has reported that “full fibre” (FTTP) now reaches 52% of the UK (up from 48% in Jan 2023), while 75% are within reach of a gigabit-capable network (up from 73%) and 76-85% of premises can get an outdoor 5G signal from at least one operator (up from 73-82%).

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has revealed that their 1.8Gbps capable UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network now covers a total of 949,000 properties in Scotland (up from 800,000 in mid-March 2023), which is estimated to have cost them around £280m (assumes an average of £300 per premises passed).
