Scottish Government Seeks Feedback on R100 Fibre Broadband Build

The Scottish Government has launched a new evaluation survey that calls for feedback from those who have benefitted from their £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT). This is rolling out full fibre (FTTP) broadband to remote rural areas and has now built to a total of 70,000 premises or 75,000 if you include vouchers.

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network ISP GoFibre has today published the results of a new study, which reveals how well (download speed) their new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network – present in parts of remote rural Scotland and Northern England – compares with a selection of major world cities. Gov Reportedly Looking to Cut Support for £1bn Rural UK 4G Mobile Rollout

A major newspaper has reported that the Government may be looking to reduced their funding commitment for the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network (SRN) programme and its efforts to extend 4G mobile (mobile broadband) coverage into remote rural areas. The move could significantly cut the number of mobile masts due to be built with public funding.

UK Remains Top of G7 Focused Digital Connectivity Readiness Index

Consultancy firm FarrPoint has published the first 2025 edition of their Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (DCRI), which ranks the G7 countries by the quality and coverage of their digital infrastructure (broadband, 5G etc.), as well as other areas like digital skills and online security etc. Overall, the United Kingdom continues to rank top and has improved its scores.

ISPreview has spotted that the Scottish Government (SG) yesterday published a contract notice for the Fife, Perth and Kinross (Lot 4 – Scotland) area under the UK’s £5bn Project Gigabit broadband roll-out scheme, which is expected to expand full fibre (FTTP) connectivity to an estimated 28,441 premises in hard-to-reach (rural) locations.

Data Suggests Storm Eowyn Caused Severe Decline in UK Mobile Connectivity

New data from Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net broadband connection benchmarking service, has revealed that Storm Éowyn (pronounced ‘Ay-oh-win’) triggered a “rapid, severe and sustained decline” in mobile performance across all operators in Ireland and parts of the UK, particularly Northern Ireland and Scotland, on a “scale not seen before“.

FarrPoint Find UK Councils Prioritise Gigabit Broadband, Ignore Data Centres

Consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published their third annual (2025) survey of digital leaders at councils across England, Scotland and Wales. The results reveal that expanding the coverage of gigabit broadband remains the top priority for most local authorities. But on the flip side, only 4% of surveyed councils are developing a dedicated data centre strategy.

Openreach Expand FTTP Broadband to Half of Scotland – 1.45 Million Premises

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has announced that their UK Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network now covers over 1.45 million properties in Scotland (half of all premises), which has also delivered a strong take-up rate of 38% and at a total build cost of £435 million.

Edinburgh-based alternative UK network ISP GoFibre has today announced that they’ve managed to sign-up 1,000 customers to their new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network in the Scottish Borders town of Hawick, which has just completed its build. Locals are now being offered a special deal that gives new customers speeds of 1000Mbps for the price of 500Mbps for the duration of their contract.

2024 H2 – UK Coverage of Gigabit Broadband Nears 86 Percent

ISPreview has today published our biannual UK summary of fixed broadband coverage for H2 2024, which found that “full fibre” (FTTP) ISP networks have grown to reach 73.53% of premises (up from 67.68% in H1) and 85.87% are within reach of “gigabit” speeds (up from 83.39%). Building Digital UK Reveals Gov’s Gigabit Broadband Build Progress

The Government’s Building Digital UK agency has published its annual performance report (accounts here), which provides breakdowns of how many premises in the United Kingdom have received gigabit-capable broadband coverage as a result of their public subsidy (i.e. funding provided under the prior “Superfast Broadband” programme and the current £5bn Project Gigabit scheme).

Streetwave Make Maps of UK Mobile Coverage and Performance Available

Network analyst firm Streetwave, which is currently conducting various UK surveys to study the coverage and speed of 4G and 5G mobile (broadband) networks across the UK using bin lorries and private vehicles, appears to have responded to some of ISPreview’s suggestions by making interactive visual maps of their findings available for free to the public.

Internet benchmarking firm Opensignal has today published their “definitive” 2024 Fixed Broadband Experience report, which gauges the performance of various internet service providers across the UK and then separately across 12 of its regions (inc. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland). Overall, Virgin Media came top in the national scores, but the regional results are different.

Ofcom – UK Gigabit Broadband Cover Rises to 84% as 5G Hits 90-95%

Ofcom has published their annual Connection Nations 2024 digital infrastructure report, which among many other things finds that residential gigabit-capable broadband ISP networks now cover 84% of the UK (up from 78% in 2023), while outdoor 5G mobile cover from at least one operator is available to 90-95% of premises (up from 85-93%). But rural cover remains poor.

EE UK Helicopters in New 4G Mast to Boost Mobile Cover on Skye

Mobile network operator EE (BT) has boosted 4G based mobile (mobile broadband) coverage across the Central and Northern parts of the remote rural Isle of Skye in Scotland. The operator used a helicopter to bring in a new mast, which has been strategically located among trees to minimise its visual impact on the natural surroundings.

O2 UK Complete 4G and 5G Upgrades for 600 Postcodes in Aberdeen

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today announced that they’ve completed a project to upgrade the capacity of their 4G and 5G based mobile services across “over” 600 postcodes in the port city of Aberdeen (Scotland), which should mean “faster” mobile broadband speeds and greater reliability.
