UltraNetworks Wireless Coverage in Aberdeenshire

Internet provider UltraNetworks has used vouchers from the Scottish Government to help it upgrade and deploy a new 5G Standalone (SA) based fixed wireless (FWA) network from Mormond Hill. The site will be able to serve homes and businesses in rural parts of North East Aberdeenshire (Scotland) with 1Gbps+ broadband speeds.

Broadband ISP connections on CityFibre’s UK full fibre (FTTP) network in Glasgow have been knocked offline after a potential fire caused damage to the operator’s local Fibre Exchange (FEX) last night, which took down their core link (gla1215). But unusually they’re having to pull in a specialist electrician from Portsmouth as they don’t have any in Scotland.

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has today announced that they’ve “completed” their planned roll-out of a new full fibre (FTTP) broadband network to the Borders area, which has covered 25,000 rural premises. This is a big chunk of the 118,000 they already cover across the North of England and Scotland (up from 115k on 28th Aug 2024).

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) has today announced that they will open a new office within the business community at Maxim Park in Lanarkshire (Scotland) during early 2025, which will ultimately become home to around 350 employees that are currently based at their Bellshill office in the same region.

The Scottish Government has finally caught up with similar legislation in England (here and here), which was introduced at the end of 2022, by effectively mandating that property developers must ensure their new build homes are constructed with support for gigabit-capable broadband connections. This will become effective from 1st January 2025.

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has today announced that the first 5,000 premises (homes and businesses) across Perth in Scotland can now access their new 1.8Gbps capable full fibre broadband ISP network. But thousands more are planned in the city and across more rural parts of the county over the next 12 months.

Fife-based network operator Gigaloch, which in 2020 began building their own Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network across a few remote rural communities in West Cheshire (England) and Perthshire (Scotland), has put in an application for Code Powers from Ofcom to help with their network expansion plans.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published its first report on the progress of the £1bn industry-led Shared Rural Network project (i.e. extending 4G mobile (broadband) to cover 95% of the UK by the end of 2025), which confirms that Three UK is the only mobile operator to miss the first coverage target for Partial Not-Spot (PNS) areas.

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today published the third edition of their forecast for Planned Network Deployments, which predicts that full fibre (FTTP) broadband ISP lines are on course to cover 95-96% of all UK properties by May 2027 (29 million premises) – rising to 97-98% for “gigabit-capable” networks (i.e. FTTP and Cable).

Technical consultancy firm FarrPoint has today published their first International Digital Connectivity Readiness Index (IDCRI), which ranks the United Kingdom top against the G7 nations. The index ranks countries by the quality and coverage of their digital infrastructure (broadband, 5G etc.), as well as other areas like digital skills and online security etc.

Edinburgh-based UK alternative network ISP GoFibre (BorderLink) has revealed that their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband network now covers 115,000 rural premises (RFS) across the North of England and Scotland, which is up from 105,600 premises on 17th June 2024. One of the latest locations to benefit from this is the Angus town of Forfar.

The latest progress update on the Scottish Government’s state aid supported £600m Reaching 100% (R100) project with Openreach (BT), which is predominantly rolling out full fibre (FTTP) broadband, has revealed that a total of 62,000 premises in some of the hardest to reach parts of the country have now been reached (up from 57,000 last month).

A coalition of 46 signatories (mostly in Scotland), including various outdoor conservation organisations, community councils / trusts and landowners, have again called on the UK government to avoid “needless damage to large areas of some of the wildest places” by reconsidering the rural expansion of 4G (broadband) mobile masts under the £1bn Shared Rural Network project.

The Scottish Government (SG) has revealed that their £28.75m 4G Infill Programme (S4GI), which completed earlier this year (here) after spending several years improving mobile voice and data (broadband) coverage by building 55 new masts in remote rural areas, has benefitted 2,211 homes and businesses.

A new analysis of 149,187 consumer broadband ISP speed tests claims to have identified the top fastest and slowest cities across the United Kingdom. For example, Canterbury (22Mbps) in Kent is named as the slowest city for the second consecutive year, while the fastest was found to be Lichfield (359Mbps) in Staffordshire.

The Scottish National Investment Bank (SNIB) has today announced that they’ve invested another £10m into ISP Highland Broadband (aka – Lothian Broadband), which is building a 10Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP / XGS-PON) network across rural parts of the Highlands.

The Scottish Futures Trust (SFT) looks set to start a year-long trial that will upgrade trains on the Far North and Kyle lines (railway) in the Highlands of Scotland with “the best Wi-Fi experience of any train service” in the UK. The capacity for this will be supplied by unspecified broadband satellites in Low Earth Orbit (LEO).
