Reminder – Tomorrow is a Nationwide Mobile Test of UK Emergency Alerts

Just a reminder that the UK government will conduct another major nationwide test of the Emergency Alerts service at 3pm tomorrow (Sunday 7th September 2025), which will be sent out via mobile networks to supporting handsets. This is otherwise normally only intended to be used if there’s a “danger to life nearby” (severe flooding, fires and extreme weather etc.).

O2 UK Warns of New Scam Texts as Network Blocks 600 Million Messages

Mobile network operator O2 (Virgin Media) has today revealed that they’ve blocked more than 600 million scam text messages from reaching their customers phones so far in 2025 (more than double the number in 2023 and 2024 combined). But the operator warns that they’ve seen a “significant rise” in gambling, recruitment and car finance scam texts.

Gov Set to Update 2022 UK Telecommunications Security Code of Practice

The UK Government’s Department for Science, Innovation & Technology (DSIT) has proposed to update their Telecommunications Security Code of Practice (2022). This sets out what sort of specific security measures public telecoms providers (broadband, mobile etc.) must take in order to protect their networks from attack and data breaches.

British Telecoms Provider Colt Updates After Major Cyber Attack and Data Breach

Business communications and internet provider Colt Technology Services (COLT) has provided an update after hackers breached their business support systems late last week, which resulted in the provider choosing to proactively take some systems offline. Work to restore the service remains ongoing, but sadly it is now known that a data breach has occurred.

Broadband and mobile operator EE (BT) has today confirmed that their new mobile plans for children under the age of 18 – called “Safer SIMs” – are now available to take, after being soft launched a few weeks ago (here). The plans form part of the operator’s commitment toward “being the UK’s best network for families“.

Broadband and mobile operator Virgin Media and O2 (VMO2) have taken a break from telecoms service provision in order to highlight the ease to which cyber criminals can break into your online accounts. In order to do this they enlisted the help of an ethical hacker to conduct a security assessment on a group of volunteers. Needless to say, account passwords were broken within 3 minutes.

The Jersey Competition Regulatory Authority (JCRA) has begun a consultation on introducing new guidance for local telecoms companies on the English Channel Island of Jersey. The aim of this is to help ensure that their broadband, mobile and phone networks are both “inherently secure and reliable“.

NordVPN Names UK as Third Most Targeted Country for Internet Malware

The latest Q2 2025 threat protection report from NordVPN, which is a familiar Virtual Private Network (VPN) provider, has revealed that the UK now ranks third in the world for the number of cyberattacks it attracts – having seen a surge of 103 million incidents (up by 7% in Q1) of malware being sent to Brits via emails and texts, malicious sites and infected attachments etc.

A new study from Guest Metrics, which has a vested interest in selling content filtering solutions, claims to have identified “widespread failures in public WiFi compliance” after it identified that 80% of the venues it tested had no content filtering (no age checks, no splash pages, no logging) to protect children from adult content – a key part of the UK government’s new Online Safety Act (2023).

Six Major UK Broadband ISPs Found to Lack an Internal Audit Function UPDATE

The Chartered Institute of Internal Auditors (CIIA) has today raised “serious concerns” about the financial resilience of the UK’s broadband sector, which appears to be based on the fact that six of the country’s thirteen “major” ISPs currently operate without an internal audit – potentially exposing them to “unchecked risks and increasing the likelihood of corporate collapse“.

Openreach Trial Panic Alarms for UK Broadband Engineers as Abuse Rises

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has begun to trial panic alarms for their staff after revealing that UK engineers reported 450 incidents of abuse and assault in the year to the end of March 2025, which is up 8% in the last year and represents a shocking 40% increase when compared with 2022-23. Other providers have seen a similar trend.

UK Government Warns Promoting the Use of VPNs Could Attract Fines UPDATE

The UK government has warned that online platforms which “deliberately target UK children and promote [Virtual Private Network] use” could now “face enforcement action, including significant financial penalties“. The statement comes after many people – ironically mostly adults – rushed to adopt VPNs to avoid the wide adoption of age verification.

The UK internet content and telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has today proposed changes that will require phone providers to withhold the Caller ID (CLI) of calls that appear to come from a UK mobile roaming abroad unless they can verify its validity. Researchers from Kai Security have identified eighteen extensions (add-ons) for Google’s Chrome and Microsoft’s Edge website browsers, some of which are both well rated and widely installed, that have been stealthily used to hide a Trojan infection that can hijack your browser and steal personal data. Worse is that 2.3 million users have installed one of them.
