Government Sets Tough Age Verification Rules for Internet Porn Ban

The UK Government has sent final terms to Age Verification Providers for the related BBFC certification scheme, which sets strict rules for how such providers must verify a user’s age before allowing them to access a porn site. As before, broadband ISPs must block websites that fail to comply. The system will begin in July 2019.

A new study has examined the impact of network-level filtering (Parental Controls) from the largest UK broadband ISPs, which are enabled-by-default and help to protect children from seeing “adult” content. Mobile network operator Three UK has managed to integrate Callsign‘s enhanced customer protection technology into their service, which is a customer authentication and ID verification system that could improve SIM-swap and call-divert fraud detection for users on their 3G and 4G network.

Government Propose to Setup UK Regulator for Internet Censorship

The UK Government is to publish a new ‘Online Harms White Paper‘ that proposes to establish a regulator for internet content, which among other things would be tasked with forcing websites to remove bad content (e.g. hate speech, fake news) and even blocking or imposing fines upon those that fail to comply.

A new survey of nearly 4,000 UK residents has found that 36.41% of respondents had at some point received a call on their home phone line from someone they suspected, or knew for certain, was a scammer impersonating a representative of broadband ISP BT. One victim was even conned out of £34,000 from their bank.

A new study from biz broadband ISP Beaming has claimed that businesses in the UK were “attacked online” some 281,094 times each by cyber criminals during 2018 (up 23% year-on-year) via 1.3 million unique IP addresses. Most of those attempts originated from China, Brazil and Russia.

Microsoft Windows and XBox Updates Bug Hits ISPs BT and TalkTalk

Since the end of January a large number of BT and some of TalkTalk’s UK broadband customers have found themselves unable to get software updates and patches for Microsoft’s XBox Live, Windows Updates and Windows Store services, which stems from a data corruption issue that also affected ISPs in other countries.

Ofcom has today published their annual 2019 study of media use by UK children and parents, which among other things reports that just over half of parents are aware of the home network-level internet content filters being offered by the biggest broadband ISPs but only around a third actually use them.

Court Drops CEO Blackmail Charge Against TalkTalk Website Hacker

The Crown Prosecution Service has dropped a blackmail charge against Daniel Kelley (21) from South Wales, who back in 2016 pleaded guilty to 11 offences (including blackmail, computer hacking and fraud) related to the 2015 hack of TalkTalk’s broadband ISP website.

Security – BT and EE to Remove Huawei Kit from UK Mobile Network

Telecoms giant BT (EE) has confirmed that they will remove Huawei’s kit from their core 3G and 4G network within the next 2 years. On top of that they will also exclude the Chinese company from bidding on future 5G contracts (core network only), but it’s unclear if Openreach will adopt a similar policy for fixed line broadband.
