ISPs Warn “unnecessary complexity” Hampers Internet Security Push

Internet Service Providers (ISP) have warned that the Government’s push to improve cyber security and thus turn the UK into the “safest place to be online” could be at risk, unless they tackle the “convoluted regulatory system” and avoid creating “unnecessary complexity” (e.g. duplication of reporting and responsibilities).

The European Court of Human Rights has today ruled that the United Kingdom’s mass surveillance programmes, which came to light in 2013 after ex-NSA employee Edward Snowden leaked significant details to the press, were unlawful and “incapable of keeping the ‘interference’ to what is ‘necessary in a democratic society’“.

Mobile operator Vodafone has announced that “where possible” they are now trying to block international Wangiri scam calls before they even reach users. On top of that they’re also pledging to “reimburse any victim who has incurred a charge” as a result of calling such a number.

BT Build’s First Quantum-Secured 500Gbps UK Fibre Optic Network

BT claims to have built the UK’s “first practical quantum-secured high-speed fibre network“, which harnesses quantum encryption and can transfer data at a speed of 500Gbps (Gigabits per second). The network runs over a distance of 120km via multiple exchanges between BT Labs in Ipswich and Cambridge University.

VPNFilter Malware Targeting More Consumer Broadband Routers

Last month security researchers found that a sophisticated and “likely state-sponsored” malware, dubbed VPNFilter, had become widespread and was infecting business devices from Linksys, MikroTik, NETGEAR and TP-Link. 4 Year Old WPS Security Flaw Still Affecting TalkTalk UK ISP Router UPDATE

One of the older D-Link based ADSL2+ broadband routers from UK ISP TalkTalk has been found to still be vulnerable to a security exploit, which was first notified to the provider all the way back in 2014. This enables a hacker to gain access to your wireless (WiFi) network by sniffing out the WPS password.
