Taiwan-based telecoms kit manufacturer DrayTek has announced that a large number of their popular wireless routers are vulnerable to a new security exploit, which enables an attacker to remotely change the device’s DNS and DHCP settings in order to hijack your internet traffic or steal personal data.

Fraud related to online shopping or auctions tops the table.

Security researchers working for VPN Mentor have tested “many random” GPON ISP routers and discovered that all were vulnerable to two new exploits that could enable a hacker to hijack the device. Related routers are used by Gigabit “full fibre” (FTTH/P) broadband providers around the world.

The High Court of Justice (Queen’s Bench Division) has today ruled that a key part of the controversial 2016 Investigatory Powers Act, which would force broadband ISPs to log the internet activity of all their customers for up to 12 months, is unlawful and must be amended.

Fibre optic broadband ISP Hyperoptic has patched a major security flaw in their ZTE built H298N and H298A (pictured) “HyperHub” routers, which could have allowed an attacker to remotely take over the device by using a simple phishing message and website link.

A number of TalkTalk’s broadband ISP customers in the UK have raised concerns after the provider sent them an alarmist warning email, which without providing any useful details claimed that they “may have downloaded a virus on one or more of your devices” (phishing emails adopt a similar approach).

A joint statement by the FBI, DHS and UK NCSC has warned that the Russian Government are now actively conducting “malicious cyber activity” with the aim of compromising network infrastructure devices such as switches, firewalls and even home broadband routers etc.

A new survey of 2,205 UK internet users (conducted between 22nd Feb to 22nd March 2018) warns that 82% of respondents have never changed the default admin password for their broadband ISP router and 86% have never updated its firmware. This could make them more vulnerable to hackers.

The British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) has started their consultation on the Government’s controversial internet age verification system, which will target websites or “apps” that contain pornographic content. Sites that fail to comply could find themselves being blocked by large broadband ISPs.
