Devon and Somerset Businesses Demand Say in Local Broadband Inquiry

The Federation of Small Business (FSB), Blackdown Hills Business Association (BHBA) and the Country Land and Business Association (CLA) have vented frustration after their views were excluded from an inquiry into the recent collapse of a major broadband expansion deal between BT and the Devon and Somerset councils.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project has just expanded BT’s “fibre broadband” (FTTC/P) network to reach an underground system of caves called the Wookey Hole Caves, although this is more of a fringe benefit as the main focus has been to connect 200 premises in the associated rural village of Wookey Hole.

The Connecting Devon and Somerset project in England has announced that a fixed wireless access (FWA) provider called Airband has won their open tender contract for deploying superfast broadband to 5,800 homes and businesses across the Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks.

The second round of contracts for the Government’s Superfast Extension Programme (SEP), which is designed to push UK coverage of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services from 90% in early 2016 to 95% by the end of 2017, has in some cases struggled to reach a deal with BT and the latest contract to fall foul is for Devon and Somerset in England.

A tiny rural civil parish village called Claverton in Somerset, which is home to around 115 people (70 homes) and resides near Bath in England, has apparently become the first such UK village to privately co-fund with BT to build a completely new “fibre broadband” (FTTC) network.

A previously unknown operator called TrueSpeed Communications has announced a new deal with Hibernia Networks, which will help it to roll-out a 10Gbps (Gigabits per second) capable pure fibre optic (FTTP) broadband network to cover homes and businesses in parts of North East Somerset and possibly Wiltshire (England).
