CityFibre has confirmed to ISPreview.co.uk that their plan to rollout a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP network across the Staffordshire city of Stoke-on-Trent, which was first announced almost year ago in March 2020, has been shelved. But they haven’t completely abandoned the idea.

We all know how annoying even a brief loss of home broadband connectivity can be, particularly during the current COVID-19 crisis, but spare a thought for poor Joseph Chesney who lives in a rural area just outside of Endon (Staffordshire Moorlands), he’s been waiting almost 3 months for Openreach to fix a broken fibre optic line.

The first 2,000 homes in the Staffordshire city of Stoke-on-Trent can now access one of the UK’s first part-publicly-owned open access Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP networks, which is being deployed under a £19.2m partnership between the city council and Swedish operator VXFIBER (inc. subsidiary LilaConnect).

Swedish operator VX FIBER, which is also busy building gigabit-capable “full fibre” broadband ISP networks in parts of the UK (e.g. London, Stoke-on-Trent and Colchester), has today announced that global investment firm AMP Capital is to acquire a majority stake in the company and support it with new investment.

Mobile operator Vodafone UK has announced that their latest expansion of 4G based mobile (mobile broadband) coverage under the new £1bn Shared Rural Network (SRN) industry project has just gone live in the rural Peak District (Staffordshire) village of Longnor, which is home to over 330 people.

The City of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire UK has announced a new project worth £19.2m with Swedish operator VXFIBER (including subsidiary LilaConnect), which aims to create a publicly-owned and operated, open-access and gigabit-capable, 60 mile long full fibre broadband network with “citywide” coverage by spring 2021.

Last week we reported that alternative network ISP Internetty was preparing to deploy a new Gigabit-capable (1Gbps+) Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband and fixed wireless network to serve UK “rural and semi-urbanised areas.” We now have some details of their rollout plan for Lincolnshire and Staffordshire.

UK ISP Internet Central has announced that they’ve almost completed Phase One of their new “Gigabolt” project to deploy a Gigabit capable “ultra fast fibre broadband” network to connect a number of businesses in the town of Stafford (Staffordshire, England), with those on the large Beacon Business Park being the first to benefit.

Cable operator Virgin Media UK has announced that 26,000 premises in Burton-on-Trent (East Staffordshire), Dronfield (Derbyshire), Thurmaston (Leicestershire) will be the next to get access to their “gigabit-ready” ultrafast broadband ISP and TV network (we still don’t know when those Gigabit speed will actually arrive).

The Superfast Staffordshire project with Openreach (BT) claims to have extended the local coverage of FTTC/P based superfast broadband (24Mbps+) networks to 95.7% of premises, which is within striking distance of their 96%+ goal for the end of 2018 (here). But there’s still no firm plan for what comes next.

Several local authorities in England, including Staffordshire, Devon and Somerset, have begun to consult on the next phase of their respective projects for expanding the coverage of “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) services. Thousands more premises and some FTTP is on the cards.

The central England city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire UK has today announced a new deal with Swedish FTTH provider VXFIBER, which pledges to roll-out an “open access” and Gigabit capable “full fibre” (FTTP/H) broadband network to cover both “residents and businesses.”

The Superfast Staffordshire project with Openreach (BT) claims to have succeeded in its original Phase 2 contract goal, which aimed to make fixed line FTTC/P superfast broadband (24Mbps+) networks available to order by 95% of premises before the end of 2017 (c.97% in terms of the raw “fibre” footprint).
