The International Telecommunication Union has revealed that the average price of fixed line telephone, mobile (cellular) and fixed broadband Internet services around the world has fallen by 30% between 2008 and 2011 (-75% for fixed line broadband alone). Meanwhile telecoms revenues climbed and the UK improved its global rank.

The Broadband Stakeholders Group (BSG), a government think-tank, has published a new study that examines the predicted demand for superfast broadband ISP products. The good news is that it “gives cause for optimism and confidence“, with the UK comparing well on the international stage, but big challenges remain.

Market saturation, delays in the availability of 4G based Mobile Broadband services and the greater propensity of consumers to use WiFi for mobile internet use will give Western Europe (UK, France etc.) the lowest annual growth rate in mobile data (29%) between 2012 to 2017. One solution could be to attract more fixed line ISP users to go mobile.

The latest summary of anecdotal consumer broadband ISP speed testing data from Broadband.co.uk, which covers the previous month of September 2012, reveals that the average internet download speed has increased slightly from 16.720Mbps (Megabits per second) in August to top 17Mbps now.

A new trial conducted by independent estate agents Delaney’s in Essex (England, UK) has revealed that houses which were advertised alongside their broadband ISP download speeds were twice as likely to get a viewing request and scored 40% more online web page views in general.

Telecoms analyst Point Topic has today revealed that the average cost of standalone broadband packages (tariffs) offered to consumers has continued to fall for superfast fibre optic and cable based broadband ISP packages, yet the price of slower DSL (e.g. ADSL2+) services has stayed fairly flat.

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has today revealed its latest customer complaints data for the UK’s largest fixed line broadband and mobile providers (those with a market share of +4%), which covers the second quarter (Q2-2012). Happily ISP complaints saw a sharp fall but TalkTalk remains the provider with most complaints.

The results from 1,613 respondents to ISPreview.co.uk’s latest monthly web-based reader poll has revealed that 81.5% claim to “require” a minimum real-world broadband download speed of equal to or greater than 10Mbps (Megabits per second) but only a third (34.4%) actually receive their currently required speed.

TeleGeography’s latest research reveals that global Internet capacity growth has fallen to its lowest pace in five years (down from 68% in 2008 to 40% in 2012), yet actual Internet bandwidth has more than doubled between 2010 and 2012 and now stands at 77Tbps (Terabits per second).

The Global e-Sustainability Initiative (GeSI) has published new research that reveals the impact of broadband use on reducing energy consumption and carbon emissions in the USA and EU-5 (France, Germany, Italy, Spain and UK). The total savings came out with an upper end of about 2% of total energy consumption for both regions.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has today published the results of its latest YouGov research, which asked 2,010 online UK adults which system would be best for helping to protect children from accessing adult content on the internet. Overall 78% rejected the idea of default filtering, which would be automatically enabled on all internet accounts.
