Cisco VNI Report Predicts Quadruple Surge in World Internet Traffic by 2016

Global networking giant Cisco has released its latest annual 2012 Visual Networking Index (VNI) forecast and revealed that worldwide IP (internet) traffic, fuelled by demand for online video and IPTV content, will hit 1.3 Zettabytes in 2016 (annual total). That’s roughly four times larger than the total amount of global IP traffic generated in 2011 (369 Exabytes).

UK ISP TalkTalks Claims Internet Retail Inflation is Close to Zero

Budget ISP TalkTalk has created its own Digital Retail Price Index (DRPI), which shows the rate of inflation when you buy goods (food and clothing etc.) online instead of on the high street. It claims that inflation on the internet is just 0.3%, which compares with 3.5% for the UK’s Retail Price Index (RPI) and 3% for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) .

Survey Finds UK Internet Users Oppose Mandatory ISP Adult Site Blocks

The results from 728 respondents to our latest monthly survey has revealed that the majority (83.9%) are against proposals designed to force home broadband ISPs into imposing mandatory adult website blocks by default. The introduction of such a system, which could be applied to all internet accounts in the UK, was recommended by the recent Parliamentary Inquiry into Online Child Protection (Claire Perry MP).

10.8 Million UK Superfast Fibre Broadband Lines Predicted for Q4 2016

The latest market forecast from telecoms analyst firm Point Topic has predicted that the UK will be home to a total of 25.9 million broadband ISP lines by the end of 2016 (currently 20,736,500), with 10.8 million coming from superfast “FTTx” (fibre optic) connections (“28 times the total FTTx lines recorded for Q4 2011“).

UK ISP TalkTalk Broadband Subscriber Decline Slows to 4.066 Million

Internet and phone provider TalkTalk (AOL UK) has today released its latest results to 31st March 2012 (Q4), which saw their broadband subscriber base decline by -13,000 in the quarter to reach a new total of 4,066,000. That’s a significant improvement on the -43,000 lost during the previous Q4-2011. The ISP also revealed growth in its new superfast broadband service.

Government Statistics Find 8.12 Million UK Adults Have Never Used the Internet

The governments Office for National Statistics (ONS) has released its latest Internet Access Quarterly Update (Q1-2012), which found that a total of 42.16 million UK adults have gone online (83.7% of the population, up from 83.5% in Q4-2011 and 82.9% in Q3-2011). As a result the number of adults who have never used the internet declined to 8.12 million (16.1%).

Orange UK Home Broadband ISP Subscribers Remain Static at 713000

Orange UK (Everything Everywhere) recently reported its latest financial results to 31st March 2012 (Q1), which revealed that their total base of fixed line Home Broadband subscribers has remained static (no growth or decline), for a third consecutive quarter, at 713,000.

Ofcom UK Calls on BT and TalkTalk to Improve Broadband Speed Information

The UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has today released the results from its latest mystery shopping research, which was designed to assess ISP compliance with the regulators Voluntary Code of Practice on Broadband Speeds. The study found that ISPs provided a speed estimate to consumers, without prompting, in 59% of all calls (rising to 93% after prompting, which is up from 85% in 2010).

ISP O2 UK and BE See Slower Decline to 617800 Broadband Subscribers

Mobile operator and ISP O2 UK (Telefonica) has today released its latest quarterly results to the end of March (Q1-2012), which revealed that their fixed line broadband subscriber base (includes BE Broadband customers) had continued to decline by -2,500 (net) between Q4-2011 and Q1-2012 to reach a new total of 617,800.

UK Dominates European Mobile Web Traffic as World Usage Triples

Website monitoring service Pingdom has used data from StatCounter to reveal that mobile web traffic (internet) worldwide, such as that which comes from Mobile Broadband and Smartphone connections, has almost tripled over the past two years. The UK was also found to have the highest share of mobile traffic, as part of total web traffic, in Europe at 10.71%.

The latest monthly anecdotal consumer broadband ISP speed testing data from Broadband.co.uk, which covers the month of April 2012, reveals that the average UK internet download speed has surged upwards once again from 10.73Mbps (Megabits per second) in March 2012 to 14.12Mbps now.

UK Broadband ISP Connections Top 20.43 Million in Q4 2011

The communications regulator, Ofcom, has confirmed in its latest quarterly Telecommunications Market Data Tables (Q4 2011) update that the UK is home to a total of 20.43 million fixed line home and small business broadband connections (excludes corporate), which includes 412,000 from superfast fibre optic based services (FTTC etc.).

Akamai Study Finds UK Average Broadband Speeds Fell to 4.9Mbps in 2011

Akamai‘s global Content Delivery Network (CDN) has released its latest State of the Internet Q4 2011 report, which found that the average global internet download speed had fallen to 2.3Mbps (Megabits \ sec) by the end of last year (down from 2.7Mbps in Q3-2011). The UK average speed also dropped to 4.9Mbps (down from 5.1Mbps in Q3).

Virgin Media UK Reaches 4.38 Million Broadband ISP Subscribers in Q1 2012

Cable giant Virgin Media UK has today released their latest quarterly results to 31st March 2012 (Q1-2012), which saw their total broadband ISP subscriber base climb from 4,351,100 at the end of last year (Q4-2011) to 4,381,600 now (+30,500 new adds). This represents a strong growth over the +17,500 added in Q4-2011.

Stricter Rules Cause UK Advertised Broadband ISP Speeds to Fall by 33 Percent

A new uSwitch study has revealed that the recent introduction of stricter guidelines by the UK Advertising Standards Authority (full details) has caused advertised (headline) broadband ISP “up to” speeds on non-superfast packages to fall by 33% (-7.08Mbps) from an average of up to 21.66Mbps to 14.58Mbps (Megabits per second).
