Warning of Future UK Broadband Price Hikes as Inflation Jumps

Consumers hoping to see significantly smaller increases in the UK price of their broadband ISP, phone and mobile services next year were given an unwelcome wake-up call today after inflation, which had been forecast to fall sharply in 2023, unexpectedly jumped from 10.1% (CPI) in January to 10.4% in February (RPI also went up).

Openreach Bring FTTP Broadband to 10 Million UK Premises

Network operator Openreach (BT) has officially confirmed that their £15bn rollout of gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) based broadband ISP technology has today reached the milestone of 10 million premises passed (up from 9.57m in Dec 2022). Some 3 million customers have also been connected (up from 2.73 million).

Ofcom See Average UK Fixed Broadband ISP Speeds Hit 65.3Mbps

The UK telecoms regulator, Ofcom, has posted a small interim update to the data they hold on fixed line home broadband ISP speeds, which reveals that the average (median) UK download speed has increased to 65.3Mbps (up by 10% from 59.4Mbps six months ago) and uploads hit 15.5Mbps (up by 45% from 10.7Mbps).

Network operator Netomnia – supported by UK ISP YouFibre – have today announced that their rollout of 10Gbps capable FTTP broadband has been boosted after they completed their latest fundraise of £230m in committed debt financing from a group of six bank lenders (HSBC UK, ING, NIBC, RBC, Standard Chartered, and UKIB).

Mobile operator Three UK has published their latest financial results, which reveals that over 4,250 sites (up from 2,200 last year) are now live with 5G – reflecting 60% UK outdoor population coverage. The average data (mobile broadband) usage per customer has also reached 25.1 GigaBytes per month (up from 19GB).

Study – UK Rises to Rank 76th Cheapest in the World for Broadband

The latest annual study from Cable.co.uk has tested fixed broadband ISP packages from 219 countries to create a global price comparison, which finds that the UK ranks 76th cheapest (vs 92nd last year), with an average monthly cost of $34.19 (£28.42). But we rank 104th cheapest for average cost per megabit ($0.61).

Steeper UK Fines for Nuisance Calls and Texts Inch Closer

The UK Government’s Technology Secretary, Michelle Donelan MP, will today re-introduce the new Data Protection and Digital Information Bill (DPDI No.2) to parliament, which among other things will increase fines for nuisance calls and texts to be either up to 4% of global turnover or £17.5 million, whichever is greater.

BT Estimates it Boosted UK Economy by £24bn GVA in 2021-22

The latest Q4 2022 results from UK ISP and mobile operator VMO2 (Virgin Media and O2) has seen their broadband base reach 5.653m customers (up by 22.7k in Q4 vs 19.1k in Q3), while their gigabit coverage added another 188,000 premises in the quarter to total 16.14 million (54% of the UK). New data from caller ID verification firm Hiya, which also works with UK broadband ISP BT (EE) to help detect and block SPAM and fraud calls, has today claimed that 28% of non-contact calls in the United Kingdom were identified as spam in 2022. Plus, the UK also comes out as the worst in Europe for “phone fraud“.
