A new O2 commissioned survey of 1,000 adults has claimed that 20% of UK business – reflecting £205bn of economic output – was safeguarded by the power of mobile connectivity during the COVID-19 lockdown between March and September 2020, which it did by enabling many people to work flexibly and remain productive at home.

A new report from global consultancy firm Arthur D. Little has revealed that 10 countries have now made “full fibre” (FTTP / FTTB) broadband ISP networks available to at least 95% of homes, although unsurprisingly the United Kingdom continues to be stuck at the back of the pack but we are showing rapid improvement.

Ofcom has today released their Summer 2020 update for UK broadband and mobile networks, which reveals that “full fibre” (FTTP) coverage has grown to 14% or 4.2 million premises (up from 12% in Jan 2020) and 2% (590,000 premises) are still unable to get speeds of 10Mbps+. Geographic 4G coverage is now 67% (unchanged).

A new H1 2020 report from benchmarking firm RootMetrics has revealed how well each UK mobile operator (Three UK, EE, Vodafone and O2) performs in terms of 5G based network availability and mobile broadband speeds across 16 cities. Overall EE offered the best availability, but in terms of performance it’s not so clear cut.

Ofcom has published their latest Q1 2020 consumer complaints report, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for broadband, while TalkTalk were the worst for landline phone and BT did the same for Pay TV. Meanwhile Vodafone, Three UK, BT and Virgin Media all tied the bottom spot for mobile.

The latest report from Point Topic has revealed some big variations in 4G and 5G (Mobile Broadband) based data pricing and usage allowances across Europe, with consumers in the United Kingdom generally placing about mid-table. But other countries seem to offer faster mobile speeds.

The annual 2020 world speeds report from research firm M-Lab and Cable.co.uk has revealed that the United Kingdom delivered an average (mean) broadband ISP download speed of 37.82Mbps, ranking us just 47th fastest in the world (that’s sharply down from 34th last year). But there are some caveats to this report.

A new Opinium survey of 2,002 UK adults, which was commissioned by ISP Zen Internet, has claimed that 2 million of the 10 million UK households that have a broadband and TV bundle are considering unbundling themselves from the package “due to a lack of value” and 1.7 million have already done so.

Crowd-sourced analyst firm Opensignal has today published new benchmarks of 5G based mobile broadband networks across 12 countries, which finds that the United Kingdom returns reasonable average download speeds of 133.5Mbps (vs 25.9Mbps on 4G). But we have the weakest level of network availability (4.5%).

Broadband ISP TalkTalk saw its internet traffic reach a new peak of 6.833Tbps (Terabits per second) at 21:25 last night, which is up from 6.488Tbps in June 2020 (here). The latest surge in data demand was driven by customers attempting to view the Champions League (football) final.

The latest independent H1 2020 study of broadband coverage among UK new build homes has indicated that 87.3% of houses constructed this year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 83% in H2 2019), which rises to 97.6% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (up from 96%).

Ofcom UK has published their 2020 survey of broadband and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (78%) again, while Three UK were the same for mobile (89%).

The original promise of “fibre-like” broadband speeds from SpaceX’s future mega constellation of small Low Earth Orbit (LEO) Starlink satellites may not materialise. A leak of early speedtests from beta customers in the USA point to “superfast” (30Mbps+), but not “ultrafast” (100Mbps+), levels of performance. Fine.. but not “fibre“.

A new Opinium based survey from Uswitch.com, which questioned a “nationally representative” sample of 4,003 UK adults between 24th to 27th July 2020, has claimed that 4.7 million people suffered a “broadband outage” lasting more than 3 hours in the past year and this cost the economy some £1.5bn.

Mobile operator O2 has kicked the 5G mobile hype train into high gear again, this time by predicting that the new mobile broadband tech could work alongside connected technologies, such as smart grids and autonomous vehicles, to save up to 269 megatonnes of CO2 by 2035 (England’s total emissions in 2018 were 280 Mts).

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) has today published their latest annual 2020 Internet Access report, which reveals that 5% (2.7 million) of UK adults have not used the internet in the past 3 months and that’s down from 7% (3.9 million) last year. Sadly issues of age and disability remain key barriers to adoption.

The latest annual Digging Up Britain 2020 report by LSBUD, which provides a free online asset search facility to UK civil engineering firms, has claimed that telecoms companies (broadband and mobile network operators etc.) are “top of the list when it comes to safe digging” (i.e. accounting for 32% of total searches).
