Virgin Media and Openreach See UK Internet Traffic Surge for Call of Duty UPDATE

Broadband ISP Virgin Media has revealed that Wednesday’s release of the new Call of Duty: Warzone Season 5 patch saw internet traffic over their network spike to 60% higher than the same time last week. During peak time (8pm to 10pm) there was also a 20% uplift in traffic. Openreach (BT) and TalkTalk were also hit.

London UK broadband ISP CommunityFibre has published the results from a new 3Gem Research survey of 500 SMEs in the city, which among other things found that 85% of businesses don’t know how fast their broadband speed needs to be to thrive and a third upgraded their service during COVID-19 due to “inadequate speed / connection.”

Virgin Media Records Strong Quarterly UK Broadband Growth

Broadband and TV provider Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has today published their Q2 2020 results, which saw them add +39,200 new UK internet customers in the quarter (up from +8,200 last quarter) to total 5,318,400. At the same time their network coverage grew by 93,000 premises (unchanged).

Survey Claims 33% of UK Suffered Bad Internet During Lockdown

A new telecoms experience study from Quadient, which is based on an Opinium survey of 2,000 adults conducted during June 2020, has found that 33% of UK consumers suffered from a “bad internet connection” during lockdown (COVID-19). A reminder, perhaps, of the need to invest in reliable and resilient networks.

BT Raise UK Ultrafast Broadband Cover to 5.81 Million Premises

BT has today published their Q1 2020/21 results, which reveals that Openreach has expanded their “ultrafast broadband” ISP network to cover 5.81 million UK premises (up from 5.4m last quarter) and that includes 2.98m on FTTP (up from 2.57m) and 2.83m on G.fast (up from 2.81m). Plus 5G via EE is now live in 100 cities and towns.

Losing Broadband Places High on List of Top Inconveniences

A new Opinium survey has found that the loss of electricity for longer than 24 hours would be the biggest “inconvenience” for those surveyed in the East of England (76%), which is followed by the broadband link going down (9%), fridge not working (8%), loss of central heating (5%) and the car failing to start (3%).

62% of Brits Might Not Buy a House Without Strong Broadband

A new survey of from low cost ISP TalkTalk has claimed that nearly two thirds (62%) of British people admit they would consider NOT buying a house if it didn’t have a “strong, reliable internet connection,” although they neglect to define what “strong” means (we suspect it’s likely to vary from person to person).

Rising Copper Prices are a Double Edged Sword for UK Broadband

Last week the price per tonne of copper (Cu) bucked expectations by briefly reaching a new two year high of just over $6,500 (£5,074), which could act as a further incentive for UK telecoms operators to remove their old cables in favour of fibre optic (e.g. FTTP) infrastructure. Rural full fibre broadband ISP Gigclear has posted the results of an interesting new survey, which questionably claims that a fifth of British people wait “over half an hour for a simple web page to load” and 1 in 10 are “left buffering for up to two and a half hours.” Hmm.

A new YouGov poll of 1,000 UK adults in London, which was conducted between 2-6th July 2020 and commissioned by full fibre broadband ISP G.Network (vested interest), has claimed that 59% of London residents would want to keep working from home at least some days of the week if only their broadband was better.

Fixed Broadband Growth Slows as Global Subscribers Top 1.13bn

New research from Point Topic has found that world fixed broadband subscribers grew by just 1.25% (13.9 million) in Q1 2020 to total 1.13 billion, but the main impact from COVID-19 won’t be understood until Q2 and Q3. Meanwhile almost every connection technology saw growth, except copper (ADSL etc.) lines that fell -10.3% year-on-year.

Study – 90% of UK Broadband Lines Fast Enough for Home Working

New crowd-sourced based research from benchmarking firm umlaut (formerly P3) has claimed that more than 90% of the UK’s active fixed broadband ISP lines deliver internet connection speeds that “meet the challenges of working from home,” at least with respect to the narrow scope of video conferencing apps.

The latest biannual UK Customer Satisfaction Index (July 2020) from the Institute of Customer Service, which reveals the top 50 organisations for customer service, finds that only three telecoms companies have made it into the top table – mobile operators Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile and giffgaff.

2020 H1 – UK Gigabit Broadband Covers 22% as FTTP Hits 14.8%

The latest independent model has estimated that the H1 2020 coverage of “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP networks across the UK has risen to 14.8% of premises (up from 11% in H2 2019), while 61.7% can get 100Mbps+ (up from 59.3%) and 22.1% are within reach of “gigabit” (1Gbps) speeds.

The release of a major new Season 4 patch for the popular Call of Duty: Modern Warfare (CoD) video game, which occurred on Tuesday (30th June 2020), pushed “broadband traffic” over Openreach’s (BT) national UK network to a new daily record of 189 PetaBytes consumed.

COVID-19 – Biz Investment in UK Telecoms Remains Steady
