Ultrafast Fibre Optic FTTP Broadband Networks Cover 1.1 Million UK Premises

The roll-out of “ultrafast” fibre optic broadband services using Gigabit capable FTTH/P/B technologies is continuing to ramp up in 2017, with our latest annual estimate of total premises passed across the United Kingdom reaching 1,084,500 (up from 780k in 2016) and this is set to surge.

The United Nations (UN) has today publish its annual ‘State of Broadband‘ global progress report, which reveals that while 48% of the global population is now online, some 3.9bn people still do not have access to the Internet and the digital gap is growing between developed and developing countries.

Ookla Compares Broadband Speeds in England, Scotland, Wales and N.Ireland

Internet speed measuring company Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has published a short update that breaks the mobile and fixed line broadband speeds of the United Kingdom down by country. Interestingly Scotland comes out on top for fixed broadband performance.

BT Pledges to Reduce its Environmental Carbon Emissions by 87% for 2030

Last year saw UK telecoms giant BT achieve their target of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2020 (i.e. four years ahead of schedule). Today they’ve set a new goal of cutting carbon emissions by 87% in tonnes of CO2e per unit of GVA (Gross Value Added) by 2030, from a 2016/17 baseline.

Survey Finds Support for a 30Mbps Broadband Universal Service Obligation

The most recent survey of 1,701 ISPreview.co.uk readers, which was conducted between 13th July and 4th September 2017, has found that 82.8% of respondents support the UK Government’s proposal to introduce a 10Mbps+ USO for broadband but 77.7% would prefer a minimum speed of 30Mbps+.

The Citizens Advice agency has claimed that over 1 in 3 people who moved house during the past two years has suffered an “unexpected delay” in getting their broadband working, with some facing a delay of more than 2 weeks. The charity demands that ISPs pay compensation for such delays.

A new survey of 2,700 British home buyers has claimed that an average purchaser would be willing to pay an additional £6,500 for a property if it meant they would be guaranteed to have excellent broadband speed, although the survey fails to clarify what “excellent” actually means.

The latest uSwitch.com survey of 2,004 “nationally representative UK adults” has claimed that over 43 million home broadband users (83%) suffer from poor reliability. But despite more reliable “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) being available to 93% of homes, just 57% of Brits believe they can access it.

Signal Problems – Brits Prefer 4G Mobile Broadband to Wi-Fi on Trains

A new survey from YouGov, which was commissioned by Cobham Wireless, has revealed that British adults would rather connect to the internet on trains via a 3G or 4G mobile data network (51%) than public WiFi (36%), yet only 33% of passengers felt that the mobile signal was good enough.

Speed Tested – BT’s Free “up to 1Gbps” London Wi-Fi InLinkUK Kiosks

Five of BT’s new InLinkUK kiosks in London have just been tested to see if they’re able to deliver WiFi speeds of close to the advertised “up to 1Gbps” capability. Sadly the average speed after 43 tests was 47.4Mbps download and 44Mbps upload, with a standard download deviation of 19.5Mbps.

Which? Finds Most UK People Not Getting the Broadband Speed they Expect

The problem of advertised vs real-world broadband performance expectations has been given new ammunition by consumer magazine Which? today. A study conducted by the group found that the overall speeds recorded in internet speedtests were only 58% of the speed that users were expecting to get.

Ookla Launch Global Monthly Broadband Speeds Report – UK at 49.22Mbps

The firm behind the Speedtest.net service, Ookla, has reintroduced a monthly country ranking of global mobile and fixed broadband speeds. In their first report we find the United Kingdom ranked 24th fastest in the world with an average download of 49.22Mbps (fixed) and 25.83Mbps (mobile).

UPD Global Country Ranking Pegs UK 31st for Average Broadband Speeds

A new study has used data collected by research group M-Lab to reveal that the United Kingdom delivers an average (mean) broadband download speed of just 16.51Mbps and ranks 31st fastest in the world versus 189 other countries. By comparison Singapore tops the chart with 55.13Mbps.
