The latest data from Opensignal, which conducts crowd-sourced testing of 3G, 4G and 5G Mobile networks, has perhaps unsurprisingly revealed that the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis is causing more Smartphone users to go online via WiFi from home broadband instead of mobile data.

Call of Duty Warzone – LINX Sees Record UK Internet Traffic

Last night’s release of the new ‘Call of Duty: Warzone’ video game, which came in at a hefty 83-101GB (GigaBytes) in size, caused traffic at a number of UK broadband ISPs to surge and resulted in the London Internet Exchange (LINX) reporting a new “all time high” of 4.73Tbps (Terabits per second) on their switches.

The FTTHCouncil Europe has today announced that their annual conference on full fibre broadband connectivity, which was this year due to be held between 21st and 23rd April 2020 in Berlin (Germany), has been significantly delayed to the end of the year as a result of rising concern over the spread of the Coronavirus COVID-19.

Birmingham Named Fastest of 16 UK Cities for Mobile Broadband

RootMetrics has published the results from their biannual H2 2019 study of mobile broadband (3G and 4G) speeds across 16 of the United Kingdom’s most populated cities, which found that people in Birmingham received the fastest aggregate median download speeds of 28.9Mbps. Sadly last place Newcastle only scored 20.1Mbps.

Sometimes 3G Mobile Broadband in the UK is Faster than 4G

Crowdsourced data analysis firm Tutela has noted that older 3G based mobile networks may not make the most efficient use of radio spectrum, although their data shows that there are still plenty of occasions where they can still end up delivering faster internet speeds than superior 4G networks.

Full Fibre Penetration Places UK Bottom of OECD Countries

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development has found that 9 OECD countries out of 37 in total now have high-speed “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband making up 50% or more of their fixed internet connections, although sadly the UK is near the bottom of this table. But we’re growing fast.

The latest independent modelling of “gigabit” (1000Mbps+ / 1Gbps+) capable broadband technologies and coverage has revealed that related ISP networks are now available to 14.32% of UK homes and businesses (4.3 million premises), which compares with 12.40% for “full fibre” (FTTP) networks (3.7m).

H2 2019 – Full Fibre Broadband Covers 83% of New Build Homes

The latest independent H2 2019 analysis of broadband coverage among UK new build homes has indicated that 83% of houses constructed last year were connected to a “full fibre” (FTTP) broadband ISP network (up from 73% in 2018), which rises to 96% for 30Mbps+ “superfast broadband” services (up from 95% last year).

Gigabit Broadband Could Boost UK Economy by £13bn Come 2025

New research from the Internet Association, which was prepared by Public First, has claimed that the UK Government’s ambition to achieve universal coverage of “gigabit-capable broadband” (1Gbps+) ISP networks by 2025 could produce an economic boost equivalent to £217 per person per year or 0.7% of GDP (£13bn total).

Study Claims 20 Million UK Homes Hit by Broadband Speed Issues

A new study from Uswitch.com, which is based on an Opinium survey of 2,000 adults (conducted in October 2019), has claimed that 71% of UK households (19.6 million) have experienced speed-related issues with their broadband ISP service, which is despite “superfast broadband” (30Mbps+) lines being available to c.96% of premises.

Consumer magazine Which? has today published yet another “Loyalty Penalty” focused survey of 7,517 members, which claims that 68% of current broadband ISP deals from the big operators see UK customers being hit with significant price hikes when their contract ends (some prices jumped by as much as 89%).

Virgin Media Adds 154,000 Premises to UK Ultrafast Network UPDATE

Cable ISP Virgin Media UK (Liberty Global) has published their Q4 2019 results, which reveals that their “gigabit capable” broadband and TV network was extended to another 154,000 premises in the quarter (up from 119K in Q3) and their total broadband base now stands at 5,271,000 (up by 1.9K in Q4 vs 2.4K in Q3).
