Telecommunications (mobile, broadband ISP and phone) providers have this year given a poor showing in the top 50 UK customer satisfaction index, although two Mobile Virtual Network Operators (MVNO) did at least make it into the top list. The highest ranked was Tesco Mobile at 7th, while giffgaff trailed far behind in 44th.

Rural fibre optic broadband ISP Gigaclear has claimed that fever over the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia is turning into “white-hot rage over terrible internet connections.” Meanwhile mobile operator EE saw broadband usage “drop drastically” throughout all matches, while 4G mobile traffic did the opposite.

The Government’s Intellectual Property Office has today published its 8th study into the extent of online copyright infringement by broadband ISP and mobile users, which estimates that 15% of UK Internet users aged 12+ (6.525 million people) had downloaded at least one item of “illegal” online content (unchanged from 2017).

The first six months of 2018 recorded another rise in average fixed home broadband download speeds to 33.29Mbps (7.82Mbps upload) among the top 10 ISPs, which continues to be fuelled by the rising adoption of faster FTTC, FTTP and Cable lines. Average mobile data speeds also hit 18.87Mbps (5.02Mbps upload).

Urban focused fibre optic (FTTP/H) network builder Cityfibre has officially removed itself from the London Stock Exchange’s international AIM market for smaller companies, which occurs at the same time as Connect Infrastructure Bidco conclude their £537.8m acquisition of the company.

A new crowd-sourced study of Mobile operator performance from Tutela has revealed that people who visit the UK (e.g. tourists) can expect to experience significantly slower Mobile Broadband (4G and 3G) speeds (average 10.25Mbps) than resident customers (18.15Mbps). The slowest operator for both is Three UK.

A new uSwitch.com survey of 2,005 UK adults (conducted during March 2018) has found that 38% have in the past noticed unexpected costs on their UK Mobile phone bill, with 17% of those attributing it to a “billing error“. On average, each billing error was estimated to be worth an average of £23 (£63.5m as a total UK cost).

A new online RootMetrics survey of 1000 mobile customers has found that EE and Three UK have the highest levels of satisfaction with Mobile Broadband speeds (57% and 58% respectively), while O2 is bottom. Overall 79% would be willing to pay “marginally” more for something faster and more reliable (like 5G).

A new study from comparison site GoCompare has combined data on broadband ISP speeds with public WiFi and 4G Mobile availability in order to produce a new ranking of 57 cities, which claims to identify both the best and worst connected. London comes top of the table, while Exeter sits right at the bottom.

How important is the perceived reputation of a broadband ISP when looking to switch providers? A new ISPreview.co.uk poll of 5,000 readers found 79.7% agreed that their choice could be impacted by reputation, while Sky Broadband and Virgin Media faired best among the largest four players.

A new “independent” DotEcon study, which was commissioned by BT, has predicted that last year’s agreement to invest an additional £150m of state aid into improving the availability of “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) across Northern Ireland could result in economic, social and environmental benefits worth £1.2bn.

The Office for National Statistics has today published their latest annual 2018 Internet Access report, which reveals that 8.4% (4.5 million) of UK adults have never used the Internet and that’s down from 9% (4.8 million) last year. Sadly issues of age and disability continue to be the key barriers to adoption.

The £1.6bn+ state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK programme has published its final progress update for Q1 2018, which confirms that it has so far helped 4,852,808 extra premises across the United Kingdom to be put within reach of a fixed “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) network.

The European Commission has publish their 2018 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2017 and 2018 to reveal the United Kingdom’s progress toward the EU’s Digital Agenda goals (e.g. NGA 30Mbps+ broadband for all by 2020). This year we remain ranked 7th out of 28 member states.

Next week a change in UK advertising guidelines will mean that broadband ISPs need to start promoting “average download speeds” (a MEDIAN measured at peak time 8-10pm) on their public packages (details). But a new study by Which? suggests that some may end up over estimating their averages.

A new report from Ofcom on annual pricing trends has found that 80% of UK households purchased bundled services in 2018 (broadband, tv, phone and / or mobile), which is down from 81% last year. But those who remain loyal to their broadband ISP (i.e. staying after the contract is up) will end up paying more.

The latest Q1 2018 (calendar) results from Vodafone UK reveal that their fixed line broadband base grew by +65,000 in the quarter to total 382,000 (up from +39K added in Q4 2017) and their 4G  mobile can now cover 99% of the UK population. Meanwhile the operator’s group CEO, Vittorio Colao, is to be replaced.
