Ookla, which runs the popular Speedtest.net service, has today published their annual ‘Speedtest Market Report‘ for the United Kingdom. Overall the country ranked 29th in the world for average fixed line broadband ISP speeds (Virgin Media is the fastest) and just 46th for mobile (EE is the fastest).

A new survey of 2,002 adults from uSwitch.com has suggested that people in the United Kingdom could potentially be overpaying by a combined total of £108 million a month, due primarily to staying with a mobile operator or broadband ISP after their initial contracts have ended.

The total number of world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.38% in Q3 2017 and now stands at 913.3 Million (up by nearly 70 million over the past year). Meanwhile the number of copper lines (ADSL etc.) fell by 6.3% over the past year and “full fibre” FTTH/P connections increased by 30.4%.

Completed on time. The Government has today confirmed that an estimated 95% of the United Kingdom can now access a 24Mbps+ capable fixed line “superfast broadband” network as a result of their national £1.7bn Broadband Delivery UK programme, but many gaps remain.

The Citizens Advice agency has claimed that 6 out of 10 broadband users have suffered from slow speeds or had their connection stop working in the last year. As a result they are calling on the government to “strengthen the voices of telecoms consumers” by establishing a consumer advocate.

Sky (Sky Broadband) has today published their latest results to the end of December 2017 (financial H1 2018), which reveals that Fibre (FTTC) penetration increased to 33% (up from 21% last year) of their UK broadband base but there’s still no sign of their Sky TV without a satellite dish (IPTV) service.

The latest ISPreview.co.uk reader poll, which was conducted between 23rd Nov 2017 and 18th Jan 2018, has found that the humble telephone remains the most popular way for broadband users to contact their ISP. Meanwhile a third were unhappy with their provider’s customer service.

A new survey of 2,500 UK consumers, which was conducted by business and tax advisory firm EY during Aug 2017, has revealed that 56% of UK households spend more time on the internet (inc. streaming) than watching TV (up from 49% in 2016) and 77% think of broadband as a utility service like gas etc.

The Government’s Office for National Statistics is to re-examine how they assess mobile, fixed broadband and phone services in terms of their impact upon the UK economy, which follows concern that the influence of such services may have been historically underestimated.

The UK telecom regulator’s latest Q3 2017 consumer complaints report has named and shamed TalkTalk for attracting the most gripes in the fixed ISP broadband sector, while the Post Office suffered the same for landline phone services and Vodafone took the most heat for Mobile.

The most recent independent data for Q4 reveals that the United Kingdom ended 2017 with fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks having covered 94.7% of premises (94.3% if you define superfast as 30Mbps+), which suggests that the Government has hit their 95% target.

The Connected Nations 2017 report has today been published by Ofcom, which reveals a huge rise in the availability of fixed line 300Mbps+ “ultrafast broadband” services to 36% of the UK (up from 2% last year). Elsewhere 4% (1.1 million premises) still cannot receive speeds of 10Mbps+ (down from 6%).

A new survey of 2,000 UK people, which was conducted by consumer magazine Which?, has warned that those who stay loyal to a particular phone, broadband ISP, mobile, energy or TV provider are being “ripped off” by up to £725 a year because they don’t benefit from the same savings as new users.
