A new report from mobile operator O2 has claimed that future 5G networks could save UK households £450 a year on energy, council and food bills. Apparently it’s all due to swanky things like smart grids, discounts on council tax (hah!) and reducing food waste etc. Break out the salt for some pinching.

A new study conducted by economic consultancy Regeneris, which was commissioned by Cityfibre, has predicted that the total economic impact of deploying “full fibre” (FTTP/H) ultrafast broadband ISP networks, across 100 distinct UK city and towns, could reach £120bn over a 15 year period.

A new study of broadband ISP growth has confirmed the unsurprising news that the UK is in a slowdown. The market is now home to a total of 26,265,000 lines but only 203800 were added in Q4 2017, which compares with 241900 in Q4 2016, 255200 in Q4 2015 and 339400 three years ago.

A new study estimates that the Community Fibre Partnerships scheme from Openreach (BT), which offers grants of up to £30K to help co-fund the cost of upgrading an area to receive their FTTC or FTTP based “fibre broadband” ISP network, could deliver an economic boost of £340m to the UK.

The latest ISPreview reader poll, which was conducted between 18th Jan and 1st Mar 2018, has suggested that the vast majority (75.1%) of respondents would rather have a truly standalone broadband connection than a bundle. A third would also like UK ISPs to offer shorter contracts.

A new survey commission by UK ISP TalkTalk has claimed that 69% of British people may be “losing out” due to an unwillingness to change and 25% agreed that they’d lost money as a result. Meanwhile 51% said that stress and anxiety were the main reasons they avoided change.

Cable ISP Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their latest Q4 2017 (calendar) results, which saw them pledge to introduce a new 350Mbps broadband tier and add 159,000 premises to their UK network coverage. Virgin’s total broadband base also grew by +24K in the quarter to total 5,104,300.

A new online survey of 5,603 UK adults has found that the average (mean) amount of Mobile Broadband data included with a Mobile plan is 5.9GB (GigaBytes) and yet subscribers only consume an average of 2.5GB, which suggests that some could save money by choosing a cheaper tariff.

The Government’s Broadband Delivery UK scheme has today published its latest Q3 2017 take-up data for the state aid supported roll-out of “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which sees adoption continue to climb above an average of around 40%.

BT has released their latest results to the end of 2017 (Q4 calendar), which saw their retail UK broadband ISP base add 35K subscribers to total 9,342,000 (vs +22K in Q3). Meanwhile their FTTP and G.fast “ultrafast broadband” (100Mbps+) services reached 886,000 premises (up from 770K).

The latest Q4 2017 crowd-sourced data from RFBenchmark has compared various European countries by their Mobile Broadband (3G/4G) performance, which found that the UK delivered an average download speed of 16.9Mbps (7.85Mbps upload) and latency of 101ms (milliseconds).

The latest Q4 2017 (calendar) results from Vodafone UK reveal that their fixed line broadband base grew by +39,000 in the quarter to total 316,000 (up from the +33K added in Q3), which in recent months has been boosted by some very aggressive FTTC price cutting.

A new survey of 514 British firms by Opinium, which was commissioned by broadband ISP Beaming, has found that 39% of respondents intend to invest in new digital connectivity solutions during 2018 and 17% plan to meet their growing bandwidth demands by using fibre optic leased lines (Ethernet).

A new survey of 27,819 train passengers, which was conducted by Transport Focus during autumn 2017, has revealed that just 30% of commuters are satisfied with the reliability of their on-board internet connection (56% dissatisfied and 14% undecided). Southeastern came bottom (18% satisfied).
