The telecoms regulator has today released their first Access and Inclusion report, which finds that older people, and those with disabilities, or low incomes, are still using communications services less than others but the gap is narrowing. Ofcom has also published a report on the pricing of related services.

Akamai has published their final ‘State of the Internet’ report for 2016 (Q4), which reveals that the global average fixed line broadband download speed is now 7Mbps (up 12% from 6.3Mbps in Q3) vs 16.3Mbps in the United Kingdom (up 10% from 14.9Mbps). The UK’s country ranking also climbed to 16th.

The latest independently calculated coverage data has estimated that fixed line “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) networks are now available to order at 92.5% of homes and businesses across the United Kingdom. Plus “ultrafast” (100Mbps+) services are available to 51.2%.

The European Commission has released their 2017 Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI), which uses data from 2016 to reveal the United Kingdom’s progress towards the EU’s Digital Agenda goals (e.g. NGA 30Mbps+ broadband for all by 2020). Sadly we’ve dropped from 6th to 7th place.

A new online survey of 1,970 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 41.9% haven’t switched ISP in the past 5 years. Meanwhile 46% have a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service but 29.6% of those aren’t happy with its speed and others can’t get the service due to issues of cost, desire or availability.

The latest ‘Global State of Mobile Networks’ report from OpenSignal, which pooled 19 billion data samples from over 1 million users and devices (e.g. Smartphones), has ranked the United Kingdom 26th fastest in the world for Mobile Broadband (3G / 4G) with an overall speed of 15.13Mbps.

A new Qualtrics survey of 1,050 respondents in the USA and United Kingdom has found that 78% of respondents prefer to get their in-home WiFi kit (wireless broadband router) from an ISP and 68% would pay between £4-£8 per month extra for better wireless coverage.

A new survey of 3,000 Brits by urban fibre optic ISP Hyperoptic has claimed that slow broadband speeds at peak-times (i.e. the busy evening period after work) are the top unexpected bugbear for people trying to move house, while flaky mobile signals and unresponsive landlords follow close behind.

The Government’s national Broadband Delivery UK programme has today announced that some 4,309,668 additional homes and businesses in the United Kingdom can now order a “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) service as a result of their £1.6bn+ public investment.

Cable operator Virgin Media (Liberty Global) has published their latest results to the end of 2016 (Q4), which saw their broadband base grow by +48.8K in the quarter (down from +59.9K in Q3) to total 4,916,700 customers. Some 215,000 extra premises have also been added to their network coverage.

The FTTH Council Europe, which campaigns for the adoption of Gigabit (1000Mbps+) capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH/P) broadband technology, has published its latest 2017 global ranking and once again the United Kingdom is nowhere to be seen. But good progress is being made.

The annual report from Ombudsman Services, which is one of Ofcom’s Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) handlers for consumer broadband, phone and mobile complaints, has revealed that UK people made 55 million complaints during 2016 and 13% were telecoms related.

A new study has examined the average price of broadband and line rental across the biggest six ISPs, which finds that out-of-contract prices have increased by 38% for copper (ADSL) connections and 19% for “fibre broadband” between 2011 and 2016. But in-contract prices have barely changed.

The latest Telecoms Market Data Tables from Ofcom have confirmed that the United Kingdom is home to a total of 25,087,000 fixed home and small business broadband lines (up by +229K in Q3 vs +206K in Q2 2016), with nearly half (44.32%) being Next Generation Access (NGA) services.

The latest Q4 2016 (calendar) results from Vodafone UK reveal that their fixed line broadband base has grown by +16,000 in the quarter (sharply down from +30K in Q3) to total 183,000 customers and outdoor 4G coverage now stands at 97% (Ofcom’s definition). But still no sign of their Pay TV service.

A new uSwitch.com survey of 2,002 “nationally representative” UK adults via Opinium has revealed that a third of consumers who suffered downtime while trying to switch broadband ISP are less likely to ever attempt such a move again, while ISPs tended to blame outages on engineer delays and admin errors.
