BT has today published their latest quarterly results (Q4 2016 calendar), which saw their retail broadband base grow by +83k to total 9,276,000 subscribers (up from +76k added in Q3) and Openreach report that 7,177,000 now take an FTTC/P based “fibre broadband” service via their UK network.

A new report from Point Topic has revealed that the total number of world fixed broadband subscribers grew by 2.25% during Q3 2016 and now stands at 822.7 Million (up from 745m one year earlier), with the majority of growth being fuelled by pure fibre optic (FTTH/P) connectivity.

A recent ‘Connecting Capabilities’ report from the Economist Intelligence Unit, which pits the UK, USA and Australia against 11 countries in Asia, has revealed that the UK sits mid-table (ranked 7th) for Digital Infrastructure and is being pulled down by weak telecoms investment. But it’s not all bad.

UK ISP Zen Internet has today kindly shared with us some data from their network, which reveals that Internet traffic across their platform for Christmas Day was down 20% compared to the usual Sunday average and their peak bandwidth was down over 23%.

Cable operator Virgin Media has informed ISPreview.co.uk that 25.76 million devices (e.g. Internet-connected TVs, Tablets and Smartphones) were used across 4,952,236 active broadband connections via their network during Christmas Day (up 8% on 2015), which occurred between 5pm and 10pm.

As another year passes, we take a look back to see how much faster the national fixed line Home Broadband and Mobile (3G / 4G) providers have become for download and upload speed. Overall EE is the king of Mobile, while Hyperoptic are the fastest altnet and Virgin Media is the top national ISP.

The amount of data crossing Sky Broadband’s network peaked at a staggering 5Tbps (Terabits per second) over the Christmas weekend (equivalent to 5242880Mbps) as many of the ISPs 6 million subscribers went online to stream video, activate new devices and post updates on social media etc.

The Government’s £1.7bn state aid supported Broadband Delivery UK programme has released its latest Q3 2016 take-up data for the roll-out of superfast broadband (24Mbps+) services across the United Kingdom, which shows strong adoption and that will help reinvestment.

The Government’s £1.7bn Broadband Delivery UK project, which has been deploying “superfast broadband” (24Mbps+) to 95% of UK premises by 2017/18 and then 97% by 2020, has confirmed that £442m is being returned by BT (Openreach) for reinvestment to help cover another 600,000 premises.

The UK telecoms regulator has today published their Q3 2016 consumer complaints study, which reports that the total volume of fixed line Broadband, Phone and Pay TV complaints in the UK has increased, while Mobile gripes declined. Sadly BT came out as the biggest magnet for broadband gripes.

A new IHS Markit report from the EU cable (DOCSIS) trade association, Cable Europe, has praised Virgin Media’s (Liberty Global) £3bn network expansion for helping the United Kingdom to come second from top in terms of being the largest EU cable market by revenue (generating £3.4bn (€4bn)).

The Bank of Scotland’s (Halifax, Lloyds) annual Quality of Life Survey, which examines a combination of broadband speed, health, crime rate, weather, employment, happiness and skills etc. to determine the best places in the UK to live, has ranked Winchester and the Orkney Islands top.

Ofcom has today published their annual Connected Nations 2016 report, which confirms that 89% of UK premises are now within reach of a fixed line superfast broadband service (up from 83% in 2015), with take-up hitting 31% (up from 27%). But only 1.7% (498K premises) can get “full fibre” (FTTP/H).

Akamai‘s latest Q3-2016 State of the Internet study finds that the average fixed line broadband download speed in the United Kingdom has fallen slightly from 15Mbps in Q2 to 14.9Mbps in Q3, which compares with a global speed of 6.3Mbps (up 2.3% from Q2). But the UK’s country ranking held at 20th.

Business ISP Gradwell Communications has recently published a league table of broadband download and upload speeds from around 92 Football League clubs across the United Kingdom. We’re not sure how useful this data is, but it’s certainly a good bit of fun.

A new Populus survey of 2,107 UK homes from Which? has found that 90% of people view broadband as being “essential” (just below water, food, energy supply and housing), but 68% have suffered problems with their connection in the past 12 months and three in ten get sub-10Mbps speeds.

How fast is “ultrafast broadband” and should the Government help to deploy it? The latest online survey of 2,390 ISPreview.co.uk readers has found that 24.8% would commit £15bn+ of state aid to support its roll-out and 48.1% believe it should be defined via a speed of 1Gbps+ (Gigabit per second).
