The latest data from Ookla, which operates the popular Speedtest.net website, is beginning to show the sort of impact that the new generation of alternative full fibre broadband networks (AltNets) are having across the UK. But for now, the seven largest ISPs still dominate the country’s fixed broadband market.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has today announced that they’ve added over 90 “new” HD (High Definition) TV channels for “free” to their Netgem powered pay TV (IPTV) platform and its related “TV 4K Box” device, which means that customers should be able to access a total of up to 210 channels.

Ofcom has confirmed that they will update their 2019 voluntary Code of Practice for Broadband ISP Speeds, which among other things will extend the current “Right to Exit” (i.e. when an ISP fails to correct a speed problem) so that it applies to more aspects of a service bundle. The changes will go live on 21st December 2022.

Low-cost broadband ISP TalkTalk has called on the government to be more proactive in encouraging the take-up of new full fibre and other gigabit speed capable networks. One of their proposals calls for a national information and awareness campaign to help highlight the benefits of such connections.

Deloitte has reportedly highlighted a series of “unusual accounting practices” (Telegraph journalist’s quote) in broadband ISP TalkTalk’s as yet unpublished annual report, which the auditors suggest could – in a reasonable worst case scenario – only enable them to meet the covenants on theirs debt by excluding more “exceptional items” from everyday costs.

CityFibre UK has today announced that they’ve started the construction phase of their £30m project to deploy a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network in the Greater Manchester town of Rochdale (England), which is being supported by civil engineering firm Network PLUS.

Low cost focused UK ISP TalkTalk has finally reached an agreement to acquire around 100,000 broadband and phone customers from rival operator Ovo Energy, which is perhaps more familiar to consumers by the brand name of SSE (i.e. OVO’s retail division acquired that base in 2020 and has retained the brand under licence).

The CEO of BT Group, Philip Jansen, has given a more detailed comment about the likely impact on their full fibre plans of broadband rival Virgin Media (VMO2) acquiring budget UK ISP TalkTalk, which he admitted would “knock off some cream of the FTTP case” but it apparently won’t “touch the fundamentals of it at all“.

Budget conscious UK ISP TalkTalk appears to have begun a new programme trial, which is giving “some” existing customers a free automatic upgrade to full fibre broadband – provided they don’t already have such a package and are covered by the new Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network.

Fibre optic network builder Freedom Fibre, which is being supported by UK ISP TalkTalk and is currently rolling out a new gigabit-capable Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across semi-rural parts of North England, has today added 10 new towns and villages in Cheshire to their rollout plan.

Multiple newspaper reports are this afternoon claiming that mobile and broadband giant Virgin Media (VMO2) is in early talks to merge with low-cost conscious UK ISP TalkTalk and take on its fixed line customer base of 4.2 million (VMO2 is home to 5.6 million). The proposed deal is said to value the company at around £3bn.

The Competition Appeal Tribunal has today “dismissed” CityFibre’s attempt to challenge Ofcom’s approval of Openreach’s (BT) “Equinox” offer (here), which introduced a “major” price cut (details) at wholesale to their Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband products for UK ISPs. But the operator is far from giving up.

The endless debate over the UK government’s bloated and incoherent Online Safety Bill (OSB) took another twist today after the Open Rights Group (ORG) pointed out that two of the largest broadband ISPs, Virgin Media (VMO2) and TalkTalk, were blocking access to MP Penny Mordaunt’s website as “unsuitable for children“.

Ofcom’s latest Q1 2022 study of UK consumer complaints has revealed that ISP Shell Energy attracted the most moans for both fixed line broadband and landline phone services, while Virgin Mobile did the same for Pay Monthly mobile services and Virgin Media were also on the naughty step for Pay TV.
