Ofcom has published their latest Q4 2019 consumer complaints data, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for broadband, while Plusnet were the worst for landline phone and Virgin Media sat on the naughty step for Pay TV. On the flip side Sky (Sky Broadband, Sky TV) attracted the fewest moans from consumers.

Some 13,000 council house tenants in the UK city of Derby (Derbyshire) will soon be able to access Cityfibre’s new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network, which is thanks to a new partnership with Derby City Council and Derby Homes.

Ofcom has published their annual report into fixed line home broadband speeds, which finds that the average download rate has risen from 54.2Mbps last year to 64Mbps now (uploads from 7.2Mbps to 14Mbps). It also examines the performance and latency of big ISPs including BT, Sky Broadband, TalkTalk, Virgin Media and others.

Full fibre builder Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve finally started their £25m project to build a new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the South Yorkshire town of Doncaster, which will aim to reach “almost every home and business” (usually 85%+). But competition will be fierce.

Full fibre developer Cityfibre appears to have recently started the build phase of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband ISP network in the Suffolk (England) town of Ipswich, which is expected to cost the operator around £24 million to complete by the autumn of 2022.

Cityfibre has today announced that they’ve already started construction of their new 1Gbps capable Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network in the Suffolk (England) town of Bury St Edmunds (not to be confused with Bury near Manchester), which was only very recently added (here) to their £4bn UK roll-out plan.

Customers of budget UK ISP TalkTalk are reportedly struggling to opt-out of the broadband provider’s Error Replacement Service (ERS), which is a system that effectively hijacks typographical errors or non-existent domain (NXDOMAIN) requests when searching for a website (i.e. the ISP returns their own list of monetised search results).

The latest independent data has estimated that Cityfibre’s £4bn programme, which aims to roll-out a new 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband ISP network to cover 8 million UK premises (hopes to be substantially completed by the end of 2025), has now reached a total of 279,801 premises passed.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has won a legal case that was started by one of its former Programme Director’s, Rebecca Burke, who had crowd-funded an equal pay dispute against the provider after she allegedly claimed to have been paid far less than male colleges. But a tribunal found no evidence of discrimination or unfair dismissal.

The annual Broadband Genie 2020 survey has today presented several awards to Zen Internet and Direct Save Telecom (DST), which saw both UK ISPs scoop wins across multiple categories. In particular Zen scooped the “Best Broadband Provider” accolade among others, while DST won for value and customer care.

Cityfibre have this morning confirmed that they’ve completed their £200m purchase of FibreNation from UK ISP TalkTalk, which increases the operator’s roll-out ambition for 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) broadband technology from 5 million to nearly 8 million premises, supported by an investment project of up to £4bn.

Yesterday was an important day for broadband ISPs in the United Kingdom because it was the first working Monday after the mass closure of schools, which has concentrated the demands of both home (remote) working and family internet traffic on to residential connectivity. Broadband ISP BT has kindly decided to open up the remote record functionality within their TV app so that all users with a UK YouView (IPTV) set-top-box, even if they don’t have a Pay TV subscription with the operator, can access it once support for YouView’s own app is removed at the end of March 2020.
