Broadband ISP TalkTalk UK SOLD to Toscafund in £1.1bn Deal UPDATE

After an extended period of negotiation TalkTalk, the budget broadband and phone provider that is currently home to around 4.2 million UK customers, has today officially recommend a £1.1bn takeover proposal from Toscafund, which including debt values the company at around £1.8bn.

Budget broadband ISP TalkTalk has reported yet another new internet data traffic record of 7.23Tbps (Terabits per second), which was set yesterday evening at 8:30pm. This is enough to beat their previous record of 6.94Tbps (here), which was set on 14th November 2020 when various popular video game updates were released.

Ofcom See Average UK Broadband ISP Speeds Rise to 71.8Mbps

Ofcom has published a biannual update for their latest dataset on fixed broadband speeds, which among other things found that the average (mean) actual download speed of UK residential ISPs has increased from 64Mbps (14Mbps upload) in their May 2020 report (here) to 71.8Mbps (14.2Mbps) now.

Openreach Takes UK ISP TalkTalk to Court Over Unpaid Fees

Network access provider Openreach (BT) has confirmed that they’ve “reluctantly” begun a high court case against budget broadband ISP TalkTalk, which reportedly centres on a dispute over unpaid fees (said to be worth c.£16m) for wholesale access to its high-speed fibre optic based Ethernet products.

Ofcom’s new Q2 2020 consumer complaints report is out today, which names UK ISP TalkTalk as attracting the most gripes for both home broadband and landline phone, while Three UK did the same for Pay Monthly Mobile services and Virgin Media came bottom for Pay TV.

Budget conscious UK ISP TalkTalk will today reintroduce 24 month contract terms to their home broadband packages, at least for a limited period, and start offering “3 months free” service on all of their most popular “fibre” plans (FTTC, G.fast and FTTP). The one-off postage cost for routers has also been reduced to £4.95.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk has reported an increase in the amount of internet traffic flowing over their network during the first night (Thursday) of the new COVID-19 lockdown in England, which at 9:10pm yesterday saw data traffic jump to 6.46Tbps (Terabits per second).
