A new survey commissioned by broadband ISP TalkTalk has found that 58% of workers in the UK said they had been more productive as a result of working from home during the COVID-19 lockdown, while 52% never expect to return to the office full time. Internet traffic on the provider’s network also remains above normal.

Cityfibre’s FibreNation division, which was previously owned by UK ISP TalkTalk (here), has just completed an interesting new pilot Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) build that saw them deliver gigabit broadband to homes in the rural villages of Hollins Green and Rixton (Warrington). The operator usually only does towns and cities.

Fibre optic network builder Cityfibre UK has today entered into a new partnership with Renfrewshire Council, which will see them invest £40 million to roll-out their 1Gbps Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) broadband ISP network across homes and businesses in the historic towns of Paisley, Renfrew and Johnstone.

Ofcom has published their latest Q1 2020 consumer complaints report, which reveals that UK ISP Vodafone attracted the most gripes for broadband, while TalkTalk were the worst for landline phone and BT did the same for Pay TV. Meanwhile Vodafone, Three UK, BT and Virgin Media all tied the bottom spot for mobile.

Broadband ISP TalkTalk saw its internet traffic reach a new peak of 6.833Tbps (Terabits per second) at 21:25 last night, which is up from 6.488Tbps in June 2020 (here). The latest surge in data demand was driven by customers attempting to view the Champions League (football) final.

Ofcom UK has published their 2020 survey of broadband and mobile service quality, call waiting times, complaints and install times among the largest ISPs and mobile operators. Overall TalkTalk attracted the lowest satisfaction for home broadband (78%) again, while Three UK were the same for mobile (89%).

Cityfibre UK has today revealed the first solid details of their plan to deploy a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTH) based broadband ISP network across the towns of Slough (Berkshire) and Swindon (Wiltshire), which will involve a commercial investment of £24m and £40m respectively.

Budget UK internet service provider TalkTalk has launched a new promotion that bundles one year’s worth of included access to Amazon’s Prime video streaming and delivery service (normally worth £79 per year) into their unlimited “fibre broadband” (FTTC, G.fast), phone and TV bundles.

Broadband ISP Virgin Media has revealed that Wednesday’s release of the new Call of Duty: Warzone Season 5 patch saw internet traffic over their network spike to 60% higher than the same time last week. During peak time (8pm to 10pm) there was also a 20% uplift in traffic. Openreach (BT) and TalkTalk were also hit.

Customers of low cost broadband ISP TalkTalk have started to spot that some of the pages on the provider’s website are pointing to future price rises, which are due to be introduced from 1st October 2020. The good news (unless they affect you) is that these only apply to optional (paid) boosts and call charges.

A new survey of from low cost ISP TalkTalk has claimed that nearly two thirds (62%) of British people admit they would consider NOT buying a house if it didn’t have a “strong, reliable internet connection,” although they neglect to define what “strong” means (we suspect it’s likely to vary from person to person).

Budget conscious UK ISP TalkTalk has finally soft launched their first “Future Fibre” broadband packages based off Openreach’s (BT) ever expanding Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network, which at the time of writing appears to offer ultrafast speeds from 150Mbps to 500Mbps. No 1Gbps, yet.

Industry regulator Ofcom has today secured new commitments from UK ISPs EE, Plusnet and Sky Broadband to reduce prices automatically for “vulnerable customers” who are out of contract, which mirrors a similar move agreed last year with BT, TalkTalk and Virgin Media. Savings of £270m are forecast.

Low cost UK internet provider TalkTalk is confirmed to have quietly rejected a takeover bid by one of its biggest investors (Toscafund) last year, which would have valued the entire company at an impressive £1.5bn or 135p a share (roughly equating to double its current share price of around 75p).

We’ve received reports that broadband and other telecoms services across part of North East England are currently being disrupted by a fire that has broken out at a core BT exchange (NCL) in Newcastle. The situation is known to be affecting connectivity for a number of UK ISPs and their customers.

UK ISP TalkTalk has today published a brief trading update to 30th June 2020 (Q1 FY21 financial), which saw them add (net) another 67,000 customers to their “fibre” (mostly FTTC) broadband base in the quarter (vs 118K in Q1 FY20). We also get an update on their “full fibre” FTTP launch plan for Openreach and Cityfibre products.

Street works to roll-out a new “gigabit-capable” Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) based broadband ISP network have just begun in the West Midland’s city of Wolverhampton. The deployment is being funded by an investment of £50m from Cityfibre, which usually aims to cover around 85%+ of premises in the areas they target.
