Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has identified the sale of its off-net broadband subscribers (BT IPStream based) to another ISP as one of several “major initiatives” that will help to “unlock further significant savings” over the next two years. The move is expected to impact the bulk of their 136,000 off-net Internet customers, most likely excluding the few that are managed on behalf of the Post Office.

Budget Internet and phone provider TalkTalk has today released its latest results for Q1-2014 (calendar), which saw them add +10k new broadband customers in the quarter to total 4,196,000 (better than the +5k in Q4-2013). But of most interest are their plans for ultrafast FTTP broadband and a converged fixed-mobile offer using 4G spectrum and femtocells.

Budget ISP TalkTalk has announced that its “totally unlimited” Simply Broadband and phone bundle has been reduced from £3.50 to just £1.75 per month for the first six months of service, although customers will still need to pay line rental on top from £11.75 when pre-paid a year in advance or £15.95 monthly.

A new report claims that the United Kingdom’s four largest home broadband ISPs (BT, TalkTalk, Sky Broadband and Virgin Media) are expected to imminently agree a controversial new Voluntary Copyright Alert Programme of Internet piracy warning letters with the Motion Picture Association and British Phonographic Industry.

One of the oldest ISP names in the United Kingdom, AOL Broadband (formerly AOL UK), appears to have stopped taking on new Internet and phone customers. Instead the provider’s website now redirects potential subscribers over towards their parent, TalkTalk.

Customers of budget broadband provider TalkTalk, specifically those whom have enabled the operators network-level HomeSafe Internet filtering censorship system (Parental Controls), have complained that the system is incorrectly blocking the women’s rights website https://sherights.com under the questionable category of “pornography“.

The Advertising Standards Authority has banned a television advert for TalkTalk’s broadband TV (YouView) service after it failed to make clear that “some catch-up [TV] content is excluded from the on demand services“.

In a major development two of the United Kingdom’s largest ISPs, TalkTalk and Sky Broadband (BSkyB), have “joined forces” with fibre optic infrastructure developer CityFibre to expand its existing Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) network in the City of York (England) by launching a 1000Mbps capable “ultra-fast” broadband service to thousands of local homes.

BT’s stock market price has been sent tumbling (falling from 381 on Monday to 360 on Tuesday) after industry rumors began to spread that the telecoms giant might soon be forced to cut the wholesale cost of its superfast “fibre broadband” (FTTC) lines by £2 per month, with Ofcom expected to launch a consultation on the subject in May 2014.

BT and EE’s home broadband packages generated the highest level of customer gripes during the final quarter of 2013. The data, which comes from Ofcom’s quarterly consumer complaints report, also revealed that TalkTalk were the worst for fixed phone providers, while Orange UK came bottom for mobile and BT also failed at Pay TV.

Budget broadband and phone provider TalkTalk has passed a significant milestone after they reported that Internet data traffic on their network in the United Kingdom had recently peaked at over 1Tbps (Terabits per second) and “regularly reaches 990Gbs a day” (note: they mean 990Gbps and not total daily use).

Customers of TalkTalk have today become the unwitting recipients of the ISPs latest ‘Pricing Notification’ update, which has revealed a raft of price rises for line rental services (e.g. an increase from £15.40 to £15.95), call charges and broadband packages.

A new TalkTrack report from marketing research firm Keller Fay has revealed that an estimated 3 million negative opinions are exchanged about one or other of five major broadband ISPs providers each day, with BT and TalkTalk suffering the most from Negative Word of Mouth (NWOM). But the news is better for the rest.

Budget communications provider TalkTalk has reduced the price(s) of their triple-play Essentials TV and Plus TV (YouView) broadband bundles to £5 and £10 per month respectively for the first 6 months of service (£7.50 and £15.50 thereafter). A £50 Love2Shop voucher has also been included.

The endless spat over competition in the United Kingdom’s wholesale broadband ISP market took another turn today after BT used a new report from Plum Consulting to support their calls for Ofcom to “level the playing field” by ending its “pricing distortion” policy, which they claim allows rival ISPs to offer cheaper services.
